New York Jets vs. Denver Broncos Matchup Preview (9/26/21)
We’re only two games into the season and there are overreactions abound. From one week to the next, Jameis Winston goes from MVP candidate to sub-par starter while Aaron Rogers transitions from aging has-been to Super Bowl hopeful. Given the unpredictability of the NFL, it’s important to analyze the first few games with a grain of salt. However, one thing we know is that seven teams are currently undefeated at 2-0 while seven have gone winless at 0-2. One of each of those teams faces off this Sunday, with the 0-2 New York Jets traveling to face off with the 2-0 Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High.
While neither team had sky-high expectations going into the season, it’s been interesting to see how both teams have performed so far. The New York Jets are breaking in a new coach and starting QB, which generally translates into some growing pains. However, it’s tough to be optimistic about the Jets after a 25-6 blowout loss to the New England Patriots. The Broncos, on the other hand, have had a nice start against two underwhelming teams. They’ve beaten the New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars in consecutive weeks, but we might not get a real feel on this team until the competition improves. With the Broncos looking to start 3-0 and the Jets trying to avoid an 0-3 record, let’s look at what to expect in this matchup.
New York Jets vs. Denver Broncos Betting Odds
For the second week in a row, the Broncos face a rookie QB. Last week, Denver cracked down on rookie Trevor Lawrence, holding the former Clemson QB to 118 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. One has to wonder if they’ll do more damage against the Jets. After all, New York has allowed QB Zach Wilson to be sacked 10 times so far this season with the rookie throwing five interceptions. This could be a disastrous performance if the Jets don’t make the right adjustments.
This will be the last easy game on the Broncos schedule for quite a while. After the Jets, Denver faces four playoff teams in five weeks. Plus, they have to wait until late November to begin facing the rival Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs. While this team could potentially blow out the Jets, we might not get a real feel for them until next week.
Even with a double-digit spread, it’s touch to take the road underdog here. I struggle to expect this Jets team to even put 13 points on the board against the Broncos defense, considering what we’ve seen so far. Meanwhile, while the Broncos offense isn’t shredding teams, they do what they need to win. Remember, QB Teddy Bridgewater is 37-13-1 against the spread throughout his career. Trust him to cover ATS once more while the teams keep the point total under.
My Prediction: Broncos win 28-12, Denver -10, under 42 points

New York Jets Analysis
It seems as though the New York Jets have had QB issues for well over a decade. Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, and Sam Darnold have all come and gone, and the franchise now puts their fate in the hands of former BYU gunslinger Zach Wilson. Wilson, along with new head coach Robert Saleh from the 49ers, provided fans with some optimism in the offseason. However, a few tough losses to start the season have derailed those sunny feelings a bit.
Week 1’s loss to the Carolina Panthers is closer on paper than it really was. The Jets were completely shut out in the first half and held to 252 total yards. Meanwhile, the defense allowed 381 yards from Carolina, including 187 yards from RB Christian McCaffrey alone. The team didn’t perform much better in Week 2, with Wilson tossing four interceptions and the offense failing to get anything more than a field goal.
The good news is that the running game came alive against the Patriots last week. The team mustered 152 rushing yards splitting the ball between Michael Carter, Ty Johnson, and Tevin Coleman. The three running backs shared the ball for 133 yards with a 4.7 average. Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur might want to keep this in mind for the game plan against Denver.

Denver Broncos Analysis
In a tough division like the AFC West, the Broncos have a tough task in shooting to the top. The QB woes that have plagued the Broncos since Peyton Manning rode off into the sunset have persisted, with skepticism upon the team’s signing of Teddy Bridgewater at QB. However, the journeyman QB has shown some serious spark in the first two games, completing 77.1 percent of his passes for 592 yards, four touchdowns, and no picks. The Broncos haven’t seen quality QB play in quite some time, so Bridgewater’s performance has been a breath of fresh air for fans in the Mile High city.
The defense has played very well so far. Denver currently ranks third in the league in team defense, allowing 251.5 yards and only 13 points per game. LB Von Miller is looking like his old self again, recording three sacks in the first two games of the season. First-round CB Patrick Surtain II has also been solid, picking off Trevor Lawrence on the road last week. While it will be interesting to see how the team performs against high-octane offenses like the Chiefs, they appear to have the personnel available to make stops when needed.
RB Melvin Gordon needs to be more consistent in the Broncos offense. Last season, Gordon amassed 986 yards with a 4.6 average. If you take away his 70-yard TD against the Giants, Gordon is totaling 62 yards on the season with a 2.7 average. If the team finds a run balance, this offense could be sneakily good, so Denver has to be hoping Gordon returns to his 2020 form sooner rather than later.

New York Jets vs. Denver Broncos Daily Fantasy Picks
Broncos QB Melvin Gordon might be worth a look here. While I noted his struggles in the first two weeks, He’s currently listed at $5,500 on DraftKings, and has the exact same fantasy point average as Bears RB David Montgomery, who is $600 more expensive. If the Broncos get ahead early, they’ll likely run the ball consistently and end with a W. Expect Gordon to get more touches in this game and grab him at a value price. Meanwhile, I’d stay away from any Jets running backs, at least until one shows they can break away from the rest of the pack.
