New York Jets vs. Los Angeles Rams Matchup Preview (12/20/20): Betting Odds, Depth Charts, Live Stream (Watch Online)

There certainly isn’t much excitement for this game unless you are a Cam Akers fantasy owner. New York is 17-point underdogs on the road against the Rams. Los Angeles is ahead in the NFC West and an easy win seems to be a lock. New York likely has no interest in winning anyway as they are in front of the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes. With oddsmakers handing out a large spread, the interesting part of this game will be if they can cover by more than two touchdowns. Los Angeles has been playing well and an in-form defense will likely limit this Jets offense to minimal production. This is one of the largest spreads and talent gaps we have seen this season. New York Jets Analysis

New York JetsNew York is at a disadvantage each and every week as their roster and coaching staff are so far below everybody else in the league it is just sad at this point. The absence of Folorunso Fatukasi is going to be felt this week as Cam Akers is running wild over the past few weeks. He was sort of the glue holding this run defense together, which has been good this season. I would expect a substantial dropoff this week as they will also be on the field a ton with that offense likely having plenty of three and outs. There are a few names on the injury report offensively that will hurt the offense. Jamison Crowder and Breshad Perriman are both listed as questionable this week, leaving Denzel Mims as the primary option and Braxton Berrios chipping in. Against a Rams defense that has really limited pass production this season, the Jets weren’t going to move the ball through the air anyway. This is just a mismatch on all fronts this week.

Los Angeles Rams Analysis

Rams LogoLos Angeles has an easy week ahead of them facing the Jets. They will face a defense allowing 30.2 points per game and an offense scoring 14 points per game. Los Angeles will likely rely on Cam Akers and the run this week as that was the case against New England. They are double-digit favorites and Akers looks incredibly fresh after the Rams have been using a three-headed committee for most of the season. As mentioned above New York lost their best run defender this week and after being fairly strong against the run this season, I doubt that will be the case. There is a major mismatch against this Jets secondary for the Rams wide receivers. Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp are in a great spot with the Jets ranked 32nd in pass defense DVOA. How much they will be needed is a different story as they should have this game in hand and not need to air it out. The efficiency will probably outweigh it for their production.

RB2: Cam Akers
WR1: Robert Woods

Betting Corner: Rams -17.5

Spread: LAR -17.5
Moneyline: NYJ +150 / LAR -170
Over/Under: 43.5

Spreads this high usually have me turn away just because the success rate is rather poor when it comes to covering them. However, the Rams are such a dominant defensive team and the Jets could be missing some of their better receivers, I can’t see them covering regardless. Los Angeles is 8-5 ATS this season and 4-2 at home. New York has averaged 14.1 points per game this season, and are allowing 30.2 on the year. They are 1-5 ATS on the road. As far as the over/under goes, the Rams might be able to cover this one themselves but still would need a little help from the Jets. With their offense likely to be a bit run-heavy this week, it will be close. The spread is where I would look instead.

Daily Fantasy Picks

Cam Akers is the start of this section this week. He has averaged over 15 fantasy points in the last three games and has gotten a major bump in touches as well. The Jets losing their best run defender is going to be a major blow to an already struggling defense. Akers has better value on FanDuel but overall this is a great matchup for him and is playable in all formats. If you want to get some lower ownership on the Rams, look towards the wide receivers. New York has allowed the 7th most fantasy points per game to wide receivers this season. I am not sure how many will be going to look at Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp with such high anticipation of a blowout and other wide receivers in good spots, but the ownership swerve is there for the taking in such a good matchup. As for the Jets, I have zero interest in any of their options this week.
