New York Knicks vs. Brooklyn Nets Matchup Preview (11/30/21)
The Brooklyn Nets (14-6) will be looking to bounce back against the New York Knicks (11-9) after a disappointing loss at home to the Phoenix Suns. Brooklyn kept the score relatively close but never was able to capitalize. James Harden had a rough game with seven turnovers but should have a better fortune against the New York Knicks, who have looked nothing like they did on defense compared to last season. The Knicks had a solid start to the season but have since faltered on both ends of the floor. Julius Randle has taken a step backward this year in most statistical categories. At the same time, R.J. Barrett showed some significant promise but quickly returned to usual form, and the Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier experiment could not be going a whole lot worse. In regards to Walker, Tom Thibodeau just stated this week that he would not be in the rotation, which further complicates things in New York. The Nets have had the exact opposite experience as New York. They started slow but then seemed to find a groove, mainly due to the terrific play of Kevin Durant. Durant is right back in the MVP conversation with Steph Curry and Nikola Jokic as the two other likely frontrunners. While Brooklyn has not been terrific at home as of recent, it should be able to pull out a win against a struggling Knicks squad.

Brooklyn has been playing up to its current potential recently, and I like that it has not dropped any games against bad teams. In the past three weeks, the Nets have only lost two games, which happened to be against the two best teams in the NBA: Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns. The Nets should be favored by several points, but you should note that Brooklyn has been terrible this season as a home favorite against the spread with a 3-6-1 record. I like Brooklyn around -6 or better, but anything wider will scare me off.

New York Knicks Analysis
The Knicks are going through changes. Tom Thibodeau just announced that Kemba Walker is out of the rotation, and Alec Burks will be starting at point guard for the foreseeable future. Not only has Walker struggled mightily on the offensive end, but he has become way too much of a liability on the defensive end for a defensive-centric coach like Thibodeau to continue playing him. The Walker revival mission should thus be deemed a failure, despite only being one-fourth of the way through the 2021-22 season. Currently, the Knicks are struggling on both ends of the floor, with several of their players taking dips in most statistical categories. It will be up to players like R.J. Barrett and Julius Randle to see if they can help pick New York back up and into playoff contention; however, it does not look promising now.

Brooklyn Nets Analysis
While the Nets have had some success this year, there are still plenty of moments where you wonder if Kevin Durant will get any help. Durant is in MVP form but sometimes gets little assistance from the rest of the Nets’ squad, which causes Brooklyn to struggle. In particular, James Harden is a player that needs to step up more consistently for the Nets. Harden has been wildly inconsistent this season, which can be partially attributed to the change in officiating style. Still, it is hard to imagine that Harden won’t get through this slump and return to the previous form at some point. The continued absence of Kyrie Irving also complicates things. There has been very little news on that front, and it seems more and more likely that he will not be returning during the 2021-22 season. This changes the outlook in the Eastern Conference as Brooklyn has become mortal once again. Durant can take this team to great heights, but it will be difficult for the Nets to get to the NBA Finals unless they stay healthy and get more production from several players, including James Harden.
New York Knicks vs. Brooklyn Nets Daily Fantasy Picks
Like many other stars in the NBA, James Harden is adjusting to the change in officiating. He has struggled to make the transition and is only shooting 40.6% from the field, which is the lowest of his career since his rookie season. Additionally, Harden has the lowest usage rate that he has had since 2011-12. Why would I be recommending Harden in DFS then? Simply put, there are several reasons: Harden’s field goal percentage will increase, and so will his offensive output. Harden has had a few games recently that resembled his game in years past, such as his 36-10-8 game against the Orlando Magic and his 39-12-5 line against the New Orleans Pelicans. One similarity between the two teams is that they are both bottom-ten in the NBA in the most important statistical categories on the defensive end. The Knicks are not much better, ranking 19th in opponent points per game and 20th in opponent 3P% (three-point percentage). This is an ideal matchup for Harden as the Knicks’ guards, including Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker, have struggled this season.
Julius Randle has not had the same impact on the offensive end as he did last season. His usage rate is down nearly two percent, and his field goal percentage is down three percent. Additionally, his point, rebound, and assist average are all down as well. The Knicks have been middle-of-the-road offensively and will have to use Randle more and more as these other players continue to struggle. The truth of the matter is this: New York has no other options. Since Randle had such an incredibly productive season last year, I have to imagine that his shooting woes will subside eventually, thus opening up the floor a bit more for him to create. The Nets are a great defensive team, but someone will have to produce: it should be Randle.
