New York Knicks vs Golden State Warriors Matchup Preview (2/10/22)
The New York Knicks travel to Chase Center where the red-hot Golden State Warriors await them Thursday night. The Knicks have spiraled out of control recently; they are on a 4 game losing streak. In their last 10 games, the Knicks are 2-8 while being 27th in Offensive Rating and 17th in Defensive Rating over that span. They are currently out of the last play-in spot, but they are only a few games back. In their most recent game on Tuesday night, the Denver Nuggets defeated the Knicks 132-115. The Nuggets saw five players score at least 19 points against a porous Knicks defense. The Nuggets had 83 points at the half! Julius Randle – 28 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists – produced for the Knicks, but he did not get much help outside of Evan Fournier’s 21 points. For this matchup against the Warriors, Mitchell Robinson, Nerlens Noel, and Quentin Grimes are all game time decisions. RJ Barrett is doubtful to play, a huge loss. The weakened center position will be led by Taj Gibson and rookie Jericho Sims if Noel and Robinson cannot play. Without Barrett, Fournier would likely see an increase in shot attempts.
The Warriors are riding a 9-1 in their last ten games, with their most recent loss snapping their win streak. They just lost 111-85 to the Jazz. They were without Klay Thompson, but that is no excuse for their abysmal performance. In their 110-98 win over the Thunder on Monday night, the Warriors experienced a flashback to the pre-Durant Warriors. In a close game, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry combined for 3 clutch three-point shots in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter. The dagger threes sealed the game and extended their winning streak. Klay’s shots were reminiscent of his 2016 Western Conference Finals Game 6 explosion, also at the Thunder’s arena. Klay had 41 points and shot 11/18 from three in that crucial victory. He is still rusty, but he is quickly proving he can return to the player he once was before devastating injuries hit. Andre Iguodala and Nemanja Bjelica are game time decisions, while Draymond Green will continue to be out.
New York Knicks vs Golden State Warriors Betting Odds
The Warriors won 106-96 on December 14th in their only previous matchup. Julius Randle was excellent with 31 points and 7 rebounds on 10/21 from the field and 5/8 from three. Excluding Randle, the Knicks shot 32 FG% and 32 3PT%. They were up one point at the half, but the Warriors handled the Knicks in the second half. Curry scored 22 points, Poole had 19, and Wiggins chipped in 18. Draymond played an all-around game with 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists. In this upcoming game, I expect the Warriors to cruise and beat the Knicks by 12-15 points after a late Knicks run in the 4th quarter. The elite Warriors offense can hang 120 on this lacking Knicks defense. Overall, the Warriors are more talented, experienced, and cohesive.

New York Knicks Starting Lineup
PG: Kemba Walker
SG: RJ Barrett
SF: Evan Fournier
PF: Julius Randle
C: Mitchell Robinson
New York Knicks Analysis
RJ Barrett’s health is a huge swing for the Knicks. Without him, the offense stagnates since it’s too reliant on Julius Randle. Barrett has the capability to drop 30 points on any team and force the defense to focus on him. Randle’s play in the paint may be unstoppable in this game, and the Knicks will need every bucket he can provide. Looney is the only healthy big man available, but he cannot bother Randle defensively. Randle can bully the Warriors in the post and feast on the offensive glass, especially if they run a lineup with Taj Gibson on the court. The Warriors will start Otto Porter Jr at power forward, a complete mismatch for Randle’s interior game. Without Barrett though, the Knicks will need a monster effort from Randle along with big contributions from Fournier and Kemba.
The bench production will be a deciding factor in this game. The Warriors have a deep bench with players like Jordan Poole (16.6 PPG, 3.5 APG), Gary Payton II, Moses Moody, Damion Lee, and Jonathan Kuminga. Knicks backup guard Alec Burks (11.1 PPG) struggles with consistency, but his offensive repertoire allows him to score 20 points on any given night. The Knicks must at least match the Warriors bench in order to keep the game close. Randle can have a huge night, but it will not mean anything if he does not get any help from teammates.
Golden State Warriors Starting Lineup
PG: Stephen Curry
SG: Klay Thompson
SF: Andrew Wiggins
PF: Otto Porter Jr
C: Kevon Looney
Golden State Warriors Analysis
WIth Curry, Klay, and Poole, the Warriors are deadly because they can shoot themselves out of any hole. The Knicks do not have a stingy perimeter defense, especially with Kemba Walker being a defensive liability at point guard. Barrett’s presence would help mitigate some of the Warriors offense; he is not an elite defender, but his athletic frame and size allows him to play above his defensive IQ. Look for the Warriors to rain threes down on the weak Knicks perimeter defenders. Looney is mediocre at best offensively, but he is solid at setting screens and getting shooters open. Also, Looney is an underrated facilitator who is willing to take three shots for the entire game.
Outside of their stars, Jonathan Kuminga is the name the Knicks should be concerned about. At 19-years-old, the rookie is playing above expectations. In his last three games, Kuminga has scored 19, 18, and 16 points. His perimeter shot is a work in progress, but his hyper-athleticism and length makes his game around the basket very hard to stop. Randle has a size advantage on Kuminga, but the rookie can exploit him with quickness and aggressiveness. The Knicks will need to figure out how to neutralize Kuminga when he is on the court.
New York Knicks vs Golden State Warriors Daily Fantasy Picks
For this matchup, I like Curry, Randle, and Kuminga to have a big night. Curry will likely be guarded by Kemba, a complete mismatch. The opportunity is there for a monster night. I like Curry to score 28+ points on 5+ threes. Julius Randle is the center of the Knicks offense currently. Without Draymond, the Warriors will struggle to contain him in the paint all night. Randle can shoot 20 times and the Knicks would be happy about that. I like Randle to get a 25-point double-double. Finally, Kuminga holds tremendous value given his price tag. The ingredients are there for Kuminga to receive big minutes: injury, blowout, and positional need. Look for Kuminga to score an efficient 16+ points and boost the bench unit.
