New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels 4/23/19: Starting Lineups, Matchup Preview, Betting Odds

Matchup Preview

This is the second game of a three-game series in Los Angeles, and Game 1 was a very odd one. The Yankees came away with a 4-3 win, which went 14 innings. Eventually Los Angeles ran out of players, and also had to use Peter Bourjos in the infield. Clint Frazier jammed his ankle late, and is considered questionable tonight. Matt Harvey and J.A. Happ both logged quality starts, pitching well to limit both teams.

The Yankees offense has been limited due to injuries, but the rotation has as well. They will turn to Domingo German tonight, as Los Angeles will roll out Chris Stratton. The Yankees are averaging 5.1 runs per game this season, as the Angels are averaging 4.3. They also are striking out just 6.1 times per game this season.

Los Angeles continues to be a very centered offense around Mike Trout, as the rest of them are average at best. Even their expected stats are rather poor. The only positive is that they make contact, but that hasn’t transitioned into many runs. Rolling out Stratton is more because the Angels are forced due to injuries.

Yankees Starting Lineup

Yankees Analysis

The Yankees will roll out a lineup that many won’t recognize, outside of a few names. Clint Frazier has seen more time this season because of the injuries, but he may have one of his own after jamming his ankle last night. If he is in, He has a .418 wOBA and .310 ISO off right-handers so far this season. His strikeout rate is also below 20%. Gleyber Torres has moved up to the cleanup spot, sitting with a .222 ISO this season, and leads the current lineup in hard-contact.

DJ LeMahieu sat out last night, but is projected to leadoff tonight. Luke Voit is a big power bat, and has a .362 wOBA against right-handers with a .235 ISO. LeMahieu has a 50% hard-contact rate this season. It is a small sample size, but the Yankees projected lineup still has a .229 ISO off right-handers and a  .360 wOBA.

Facing Chris Stratton tonight, this is an easier matchup for this group. He has a 6.15 xFIP this season, and a higher walk rate than strikeout rate. He is allowing a .418 wOBA to left-handers and a .355 wOBA to right-handers. Stratton is coming over from San Francisco last season, where he struggled more often than not. He throws a fastball slider mostly, but will use his curve more than his slider to left-handed hitters.

Angels Starting Lineup

Angels Analysis

The Angels continue to put out a mediocre offense, and that isn’t going to change until they get some healthier outfielders back. Ohtani is on his way back, while Justin Upton is going to be a bit longer. They will face Domingo German tonight, who has a 31% strikeout rate this season. German is a fastball/curve pitcher, throwing them almost 70% of the time. German has an excellent curveball, sitting with a 53% whiff rate and .139 wOBA allowed. He has a sneaky fastball at 94mph that also has a 30% whiff rate. The Yankees have an edge with their pitcher tonight.

Mike Trout is hitting .259 in his last seven games, with three XBH. A bit below his usual standards, but of course he is the best player in baseball. Both him and his outfield teammate, Kole Calhoun, have a near 50% hard-contact rate. However, Calhoun’s strikeout rate is 1% higher than Trout’s walk rate of 25%. Andrelton Simmons isn’t a big power bat, but his contact is valued in the middle of the order.

This lineup is combining for a .309 wOBA and .185 ISO against right-handers, with just an 18% strikeout rate. They don’t have great numbers against the curveball, which could be troubling if German can locate it well.
