Matchup Preview

These two teams are set to engage in a series for the fourth time this season. In the eight head-to-head games, the Yankees (28-17) have won six, including the last five.

While the Yankees, coming off a series win against the Tampa Bay Rays, have been playing some of their best ball as of late, the Orioles (15-31) have struggled, winning only two of their past 11.

Taking the hill for the Yankees tonight will be J.A. Happ. The big southpaw defeated Baltimore in his last appearance, but overall, it’s been a shaky year Happ. His 4.44 ERA and 3-3 record are a far cry from the 2.69 ERA and 7-0 record he held with the Yankees last season after coming via trade from Toronto.

Opposing Happ will be Baltimore’s Andrew Cashner who sports a 4-2 record and a 4.10 ERA on the season. He last both of his previous starts against the Yankees this year, and, in the last outing, he surrendered six runs in four innings.

With a win, the Yankees would maintain their perch atop the AL East standings, holding off Tampa Bay and the resurgent Boston Red Sox. For the Orioles, a win would inch them closer to the Toronto Blue Jays in their quest out of the AL East cellar.

Yankees Analysis

new york yankeesSeeing Gardner, a trusty fielder with a solid but unexceptional bat, manning the DH spot might raise some eyebrows, but after yesterday’s demolition of the Rays, Gardner’s bat has more than proven its worth. In a 13-5 victory, the veteran outfielder homered, doubled, and singled while racking up three RBI.

He was not alone of course. LeMahieu and Hicks each homered yesterday as well. For the former, it was only a continuation of a surprisingly stellar year. For the latter, it was a much-needed welcome back to the lineup after a long stint on the Injury List.

Perhaps the most unexpected performance from yesterday’s game belongs to Sanchez. The generally slow-footed catcher recorded a triple against Tampa Bay, the first of his career. To expect another one would be foolish, but Sanchez has already hit six home runs against the Orioles this year, so a round-tripper is far more likely.

Against Cashner specifically, many of these New York hitters have excelled. In a limited sample size of four at-bats, Voit has three hits and a home run, while LeMahieu, in 22 at-bats, sports a .318 batting average, and Hicks, in 16 appearances, hits .375.

While the splits of Gardner and Sanchez against Cashner are less impressive, both of them are trending in the right direction as hitters and should see more success.

Orioles Starting Lineup

1. J. Rickard, CF
2. J. Villar, 2B
3. T. Mancini, RF
4. R. Nunez, DH
5. H. Alberto, 3B
6. S. Wilkerson, LF
7. R. Ruiz, 1B
8. P. Severino, C
9. R. Martin, SS

Orioles Analysis

baltimore oriolesThe season is still fairly young, meaning that the Orioles still have time to turn their season around, but that turnaround needs to start almost immediately, with this lineup.

All year long, Trey Mancini has been the team’s best hitter, leading Baltimore in hits, doubles, home runs, and batting average. In yesterday’s 10-0 loss to the Indians, he was held hitless, something that rarely happens twice in a row.

Jonathan Villar has been another bright spot for the Orioles. His 47 hits rank second on the team, and he has recorded 10 doubles along with a respectable .251 batting average. Against the Cleveland, he tied the team lead with one hit.

For the Orioles to put a scare into the first-place Yankees, they’ll need more than the five hits they got against the Indians. That starts with Mancini and Villar.

Unfortunately for Baltimore, Villar is hitless in 19 career at-bats against Happ, while fellow Orioles Severino and Rickard have similarly struggled. On a more positive note, Mancini has hit .320 in 25 appearances against Happ, while Nunez has three home runs off of him in just 15 tries.

Yankees vs Orioles Betting Odds

The line is currently set at Yankees -150, Orioles +150. With Dwight Smith Jr. out of the lineup, I don’t see how Baltimore can score enough runs to overpower the Yankees. Although Happ has not been as strong as he was last year, he is 2-1 in May, and he is backed by an offense that can generate runs from the first batter until the last. Until Baltimore proves that they can score on a consistent basis, I recommend avoiding them as a bettor.
