New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox 7/31/20: Starting Lineups, Betting Odds (Matchup Preview)

Matchup Preview

The Boston Red Sox (3-4) will travel to the Big Apple to take on their longtime rival, the New York Yankees (4-1). Tonight will be the first meeting between the two storied franchises in the MLB’s shortened 60-game season. The Yankees are coming off of a makeshift series against the Baltimore Orioles that they were not originally supposed to play. New York was scheduled to face the Philadelphia Phillies this week, but the series was postponed due to the Marlins coronavirus outbreak, whom the Phillies had just played in a series. New York beat Baltimore in the two makeshift games they played in, scoring over eight runs in both games. The Red Sox began the season very poorly, dropping 4 of their first five games. However, Boston was able to bounce back and defeat the Mets in the final two games of their four-game series against them. Grabbing these wins was huge for Boston, as no team wants to fall behind in the standings in a season where each game holds more weight in the playoff race. The Red Sox will undoubtedly have their work cut out for them tonight against the Yankees, who currently have the highest winning percentage in the AL. On the mound tonight for Boston will be Ryan Weber, who is 0-1 on the season. New York will start Jordan Montgomery, who will be making his first start of the shortened 2020 season.

Yankees Analysis

new york yankees

The Yankees have seemingly been steamrolling their competition early on in the shortened MLB season. Despite one lone loss to the Washington Nationals in their first series of the season, the Yankees have looked dominant. The Bronx Bombers boast perhaps the best starting lineup in all of baseball. Their hitting corps are led by Giancarlo Stanton, who has been having an MVP worthy campaign early on in the year. Stanton is hitting .500 on the year with two HRs and six RBIs. He looks like the Giancarlo of old after he missed the majority of last season with an injury. DJ LeMahieu has also been quite productive for the Yankees, hitting .412 on the season thus far. Star right fielder Aaron Judge has also provided some quality batting, with two HRs and six RBIs on the season himself. The weakest spot of this Yankees team is their pitching rotation, although it isn’t even that bad. The team signed Gerrit Cole in the offseason, making him the highest-paid pitcher in the league. New York also has Masahiro Tanaka, although he has missed the beginning of the season with an injury. New York has started J.A. Happ and James Paxton in his absence, although neither of them played particularly well. The Yankees will throw out Jordan Montgomery tonight, who hasn’t played yet this season. After starting 29 games for the Yankees his rookie season and finishing 6th in ROY voting, Montgomery has only pitched in eight games the past two seasons. He has a career ERA of 3.91 and still has room to improve, as he is only 27 years old. The Red Sox will be an interesting match-up for Montgomery, as they have some talented hitters but don’t boast one of the league’s best lineups.

Red Sox Starting Lineup

  6. Christian Vasquez (R) C
  7. Michael Chavis (R) 1B
  8. Jackie Bradley Jr. (L) CF
  9. Jose Peraza (R) 2B

Red Sox Analysis

boston red

After a disappointing 1-4 start to the MLB season, the Red Sox defeated the Mets two games in a row to get to a 3-4 record. Boston is looking to keep pace with the Yankees, Rays, and Blue Jays, who are currently ahead of the Red Sox in the AL East. If the Red Sox hope to do so, they will need to play their best baseball against the Yankees. The two players currently producing the most on offense for Boston are Jackie Bradley Jr. and Christian Vazquez, who are both not considered either of the team’s stars. Bradley Jr. is batting .400 on the season in 20 at-bats while Vazquez is hitting .421 with four HRs and eight RBIs. The Red Sox might have a good chance to beat the Yankees if both of these guys can continue to produce, but they will also need production from their star players. Xander Bogaerts is only hitting .182 on the season, and J.D. Martinez is currently hitting .241. With the Yankees boasting such an impressive starting lineup, the Red Sox will need to keep pace with them on offense if they want to have a chance to win. Their starting pitcher tonight, Ryan Weber, also has a tough task ahead of him. He did not have a great first start, as the Red Sox lost the game and Weber collected a 14.73 ERA. Boston needs to hope that Weber can pitch well for them tonight, or else the Red Sox’s chances of winning this game are pretty slim.

Yankees vs Red Sox Fantasy Angle

giancarlo stanton

For this fantasy baseball angle for this game, there is one obvious choice for a player to highlight. Giancarlo Stanton has been on a roll early in the season and is making an early case for MVP if he continues to produce at this level. Stanton is hitting .500 on the season thus far and has looked better than ever for the Yankees. Tonight’s matchup against Ryan Weber and the Yankees is just another reason you should start Stanton if you have him on your team. Weber had a disappointing beginning to the season, posting a 14.73 ERA after taking a loss to the Baltimore Orioles. With a pitcher who has had a rocky start to his 2020 campaign on the mound, Stanton is a surefire start in fantasy tonight. The Yankees have so many weapons on offense, leading me to believe that there will be more opportunities for Stanton to drive runners home or hit a multi-run HR with more of his teammates getting on base. While many Yankees could have a great day hitting the ball, Stanton is the most for sure bet to have a great game tonight.

Yankees vs Red Sox Betting Odds

Yankees Odds: -235
Red Sox Odds: +190
Over/Under: 10

The oddsmakers have favored the New York Yankees in tonight’s matchup. Given the start of the new season that this team has had, it is tough to argue that they aren’t tonight’s favorites. Boston has had its fair share of struggles early on while the Yankees have been steamrolling their competition. The Red Sox are also starting a pitcher who struggled in his first outing against Baltimore. With all of this in mind, my best suggestion would be to bet on New York and take the over in runs. New York is loaded with talent on the offensive side and has a favorable matchup against them on the mound.

I’ve been lucky enough to see both the Nats and Caps win titles in my lifetime, however I have a feeling that my Redskins and Wizards won’t be joining them as champions anytime soon.
