Matchup Preview

After only allowing two hits in the first 4 innings, Yankees starter J.A. Happ served up a 93.1 MPH four-seamer that White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson launched into center field for his tenth of the year. That home run knotted the score at 4 a piece as Chicago until Leury Garcia homered off Adam Ottavino to help the Sox clinch a 5-4 victory on Thursday night.

The Yankees (41-26) , even with all their injuries, sit atop the AL East as they look to end their losing skid and even up the series. They came into this series going 4-6 including series losses to Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Indians, and a split against the New York Mets. Nevertheless, they currently hold the 5th highest run differential in the MLB at +69 and look to maintain their lead over the always surprising Tampa Bay Rays and World Series Champion Boston Red Sox.

Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox (33-34) entered the series 5-5 over their last 10 and sit in 3rd place in the AL Central. They currently sit one game behind the Indians for second and 12 games behind the Twins. In what many would deem a rebuild year in the South Side of Chicago, the White Sox have proved to be an intriguing team with a developing ace and several youngsters who may have finally lived up to their potential.

Yankees Analysis

new york yankeesIn a tough loss that saw the Yankees lose 4 runs on two separate home runs, New York will look to rebound as they deploy a lineup with potentially two All-Stars in Luke Voit (1B) and Gary Sanchez (C). With the addition of free agent acquisition DJ LeMahieu accompanied with Didi Gregorious, Aaron Hicks, Gleyber Torres, and Brett Gardner, the Yankees have fielded quite a team despite their injuries. They’ve managed to be a top scoring team thus far, ranking 7th in both runs and RBIs.

Against former Yankee Ivan Nova, New York tallied 6 hits, 2 walks, and 4 runs on Thursday night. Tonight doesn’t look any easier as they match up against Lucas Giolito who finds himself as one of the many successful young pitchers this year. In their careers, LeMahieu has found the most success against Giolito with 2 hits and 2 RBI in just 4 at-bats. In a similarly small sample size, Brett Gardner and Aaron Hicks each have a homer off Giolito albeit facing him only 5 and 3 times, respectively.

On the hill, New York will deploy veteran C.C. Sabathia (3-3) who will look to even out the series in a best of four against the White Sox. He enters with a 3.96 ERA and 1.28 WHIP and in his 549th career start, tying him 30th all time with Mickey Welch. This year, Sabathia has fared much better against lefties, holding them to a .179 batting average compared to the .263 clip against righties. One thing to keep an eye on is how long Manager Aaron Boone allows Sabathia to pitch into the game. In his third time through the order, C.C. has allowed batters to hit .324 while being unable to strike them out.

White Sox Starting Lineup

1. Leury Garcia (S) CF
2. Tim Anderson (R) SS
3. Jose Abreu (R) 1B
4. Eloy Jimenez (R) LF
5. James McCann (R) C
6. Yoan Moncada (S) 3B
7. Jose Rondon (R) DH
8. Ryan Cordell (R) RF
9. Yolmer Sanchez (S) 2B

White Sox Analysis

chicago whiteComing back from down 4-0 to winning 5-4, the White Sox made a statement that they shouldn’t be overlooked even in a lost season. Youngsters Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, and Eloy Jimenez have proved that they’re the real deal. This summer, Chicago will likely be continuing the trend of non-playoff bound teams by unloading veterans for prospects. After drafting prospect Andrew Vaughn out of Cal with the 3rd overall pick in this year’s draft, will General manager Rick Hahn be willing to pull the trigger on a potential Jose Abreu trade?

Squaring off against the veteran C.C. Sabathia, White Sox hitters have had plently of matchups against the 19 year lefty. Though Jose Abreu may be hoping to impress scouts from possible suitors, he may have to wait until the weekend as he’s a 0-11 lifetime against Sabathia. Catcher Wellington Castillo has perphaps the most success against the starter with a .300 average while Yonder Alonso and Tim Anderson have each batted .250 against Sabathia lifetime. However, Chicago will remain without breakout candidate Yoan Moncada who remains out with a mid-back injury; he anticipates a return sometime during the latter half of the four game series.

On the mound for the White Sox will be Lucas Giolito (9-1) who holds a 2.28 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and ranks 7th in strikeouts in the last month across all of MLB. At the end of April, Giolito’s ERA was 5.30. After the month of May and his past starts in June, his ERA has come down over 3 full points by giving up only 8 runs while also striking out 66 in 56.1 innings. Coming over in the Adam Eaton trade with the Nationals, Giolito has finally reached his potential as a once highly touted prospect and looks to be a major building block for Chicago moving forward.

Yankees vs White Sox Betting Odds

The line is currently set at Yankees -133, White Sox +133.
Last night, the line sat at NYY -127 and CHW +127. The main questions in tonight’s matchup will be whether the Yankees can figure out Giolito and whether Sabathia can prevent runs while going through the third time through the order. If not, he can turn to the Yankees bullpen led by flamethrower Aroldis Chapman. The over/under for this game is set at 10.6 compared to the 9.5 mark of last night’s game. I’d likely predict a low scoring affair given Giolito’s past success over the past month and the Yankees desperation to win following a tough loss and need to stay ahead in their divisional race. If Giolito can go 7 or 8 innings with the lead, the White Sox stand a pretty good chance at a victory; otherwise, the Yankees pitching will be the headline story of New York’s victory on Friday night.
