New York Yankees Vs. Detroit Tigers (4/21/22) Starting Lineup, Betting Odds, Prediction

Last season the Yankees were tied with the Boston Red Sox for second place in the American League East at 92-70; New York lost to Boston in the wild card round.  The Yankees enter the 2022 season at +950 to win their first World Series since 2009.  Aaron Boone in his fifth season as the New York manager, has won over 330 games at the helm of the Yankees.  New York has won six out of their first 11 games this season.  In 2021, the Tigers were 77-85, third place in the American League Central Division.  Manager A.J. Hinch in his second season as the Detroit skipper has won over 650 games in his career: managing the Arizona Diamondbacks and Houston Astros.  While a long shot, the Tigers are +9000 to win the World Series; their last title came in 1984.  Detroit’s last playoff appearance was 2014, losing in the Division Series to the Baltimore Orioles.  Tigers have started the 2022 season at 4-6.

New York Yankees Vs. Michael Pineda (R)

In the 2021 season, Aaron Judge played in 148 games, belting 39 home runs, driving in 98 runs, slugging .544 with an OPS of .916.  In his first 40 at-bats in 2022, he has 10 hits, three doubles and a home run.  Judge is +2800 to win the 2022 American League MVP.

Giancarlo Stanton hit .273, slamming 35 home runs and driving in 97 runs in 2021.  In his 12th year the slugger had a .516 slugging percentage and an OPS of .870 in 139 games.  Stanton has two home runs, eight runs batted in with an OPS of .685 in 43 at-bats this year.  The 2017 National League MVP is +6000 to win the American League MVP this year.  In five at-bats against Michael Pineda, Stanton has one hit. 

DJ LeMahieu has hit .307 since joining the Yankees in 2019.  This season, he’s hitting .313 with one home runs, four runs driven in, 15 total bases with an OPS of .890.  LeMahieu has three hits in six at-bats against Michael Pineda.  Left-handed first baseman, Anthony Rizzo who was acquired at last year’s trade deadline, re-signed with the Yankees in the off-season.  Rizzo leads the Yankees in home runs this season with three.  Additionally, he has eight runs knocked in with five runs scored and an OPS of .890.  As a Minnesota Twin last season, Josh Donaldson hit .247 with 26 home runs and 72 runs batted in.  Additionally, the 2015 America League MVP had 217 total bases, .475 slugging percentage and an OPS of .827 in 2021.  To start the 2022 season, he has two doubles, one home run, three runs batted in and 13 total bases.  In 11 at-bats against Michael Pineda, Donaldson has a home run and one RBI.

Michael Pineda will be making his first appearance of the season for the Tigers on Thursday.  Pineda pitched for the Yankees from 2014-17, going 31-31 with a 4.16 ERA.  Last season he went 9-8 with a 3.62 ERA in 109 1/3 innings for the Minnesota Twins.

Detroit Tigers Vs. Jordan Montgomery (L)

First baseman Spencer Torkelson the first pick in the 2020 MLB draft leads the Tigers in home runs (two) and runs batted in (five) this year.  He has 13 total bases with a .448 slugging percentage and a .791 OPS.  Jonathan Schoop in his third season with Detroit has two doubles, a home run, three runs batted in with 10 total bases on the year.  In his 10-year career, Schoop has hit .260 with 164 home runs and knocked in 502 runs.  In 14 at-bats against the Yankees Jordan Montgomery, he has four hits (one home run), four runs batted in with a .905 OPS.  Jeimer Candelario has two doubles, two runs batted in, three runs scored and seven total bases in 2022.  He’s hitless in three at-bats against New York’s Montgomery. 

Outfielder Austin Meadows was acquired from Tampa Bay in early April and leads the Tigers in hitting with a .370 average.  On the year he’s scored five runs, driven in two runs, slugged .444 with an OPS of .944.  In 13 at-bats against Montgomery, Meadows has three hits.  Robbie Grossman is a .249 lifetime hitter with 73 home runs and 323 runs batted in.  This season he has scored two runs, driven in two runs, and drawn four walks.  Grossman has one hit in five at-bats against Jordan Montgomery. 

Miguel Cabrera one of the best right-handed hitters of all-time is on the verge of getting his 3,000th career hit. He’s a lifetime .310 hitter with 502 home runs, 1,807 runs batted in and a .919 OPS.  This season, he’s hitting .281 with three runs batted in and a .695 OPS.  Against New York’s Montgomery he has one hit in three at-bats.

Last season, Jordan Montgomery started 30 games for the Yankees and was 6-7 with a 3.83 ERA.  He struck out 162 batters in 157 1/3 innings while allowing 67 runs with a 1.278 WHIP.  Through two starts in 2022, Montgomery has an ERA of 3.24 in 8 1/3 innings tossed.  He’s allowed three earned runs, struck out six hitters out with a 1.2 WHIP.

The Yankees offense is struggling to begin the 2022 season, scoring 3.01 runs per nine innings.  They’re hitting .224 as a team; 19th in Major League Baseball and an OPS of .662.  Under is 4-0 in New York’s last four games as a road favorite.  Over is 3-1-1 in the Tigers last five Thursday games.  Detroit’s offense is averaging 3.03 runs per nine innings.  The Tigers are hitting .196 as a team; 28th in Major League Baseball with an OPS of .596.  Under is 5-2 in Detroit’s last seven during game three of a series.  I’ll take the Yankees in this game to win by at least 1.5 runs with the clubs scoring over eight runs combined.
