TV Section:New York Yankees vs Houston Astros, 4/10/19 7:40 PM ET, Minute Made Park, Houston, Texas. TV: Yankees on Yes, Astros on ATTSportsNet-SW, Radio: Yankees on WFAN 660/101.9 FM, Astros on KBME 790 AM/94.5 FM HD-2
This will be the ladder game of a 3-game series between the Astros and Yankees. The Astros come in at 7-5 having taken the first two games of the series, and the Yankees at 5-6.
Tuesday’s matchup was an ugly one for the Yanks. Missed opportunities at the plate, shaky defense, and a rocky bullpen performance led to the Astros scoring 4 late inning runs and winning what should have been the Yankees game. This seems to be a recurring theme for the Yankees this season, and fans are without a doubt frustrated. On the bright side, Gary Sanchez went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs in the win.
The Astros offensive performance was a bit more impressive, as they knocked 11 hits. Michael Brantley went 3 for 5 out of the DH spot and Altuve went 2 for 4. On the pitching side, Gerrit Cole turned in 7 decent innings, giving up 4 hits and 3 earned runs.
Wednesday nights matchup should be a relatively low scoring one. Starting for the Yankees is James Paxton, who has had great success in his career against the Astros. Houston will be starting Collin McHugh, who has gone 5-0 with an ERA of 1.18 in his last 8 starts at Minute Maid Park.
The Yankees come into Wednesday’s matchup in second place in the AL East, but still 3.5 games behind the surging Rays. The Yankees generally have shown strong performances in most of their games this season, but bad defense and a shaky bullpen have time after time led to late inning losses.
Offensively, Gary Sanchez and Luke Voit have been leading the charge. Sanchez comes into game with 6 homers and 11 RBIs while Voit comes in with 3 homers and 10 RBIs.
Obviously, the offense has taken a hit with the injuries to Miguel Andujar and Giancarlo Stanton. However, Aaron Judge is bound to get hot at any moment and Gleyber Torres has been showing promising offensive signs as well.
Paxton comes into the game at 1-1 with an ERA just over 4.00. However, his success against the Astros is unquestionable, as he has a 7-3 record with an ERA of 2.89. He, thus far, has recorded 14 strikeouts and 3 walks over 11 innings as a Yankee.
The Astros come into Wednesday in a similar position: 2ndplace and 3.5 games behind the hot Mariners. However, they have been hot lately after starting the season rather slowly.
Leading the team in average is none other than third-baseman Alex Bregman. He comes into the game batting .341. In terms of run production, Jose Altuve, George Springer, and Michael Brantley have been vital.
The Astros starter Wednesday night will be Collin Mchugh. He has put up good numbers over his first two starts, posting an ERA of 2.45. He looks to have another solid start against the Yanks and earn the Astros a series sweep.
For two teams that topped the power rankings at the beginning of the season, neither have shown a performance that parallels that of last year. However, the Astros look to continue their hot run to gain ground and claim first place in the NL West.
Yankees vs Astros Betting Odds:
This one is a tough call, but I would have to go with the Yankees. James Paxton has had great success against Houston in his career and the Yankees are willing to do what it takes to not get swept. Moneyline has the Astros at -116 and the Yankees at +106. The final score is currently predicted as the Yankees winning 5 to 3.58.
