New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics, 8/23/19 10:10 PM ET Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA, TV: New York (YES, FB-WATCH(out-of-market only)), Los Angeles (SportsNet LA, SNLA Spanish) Radio: New York (WFAN 660/101.9 FM, WADO 1280), Los Angeles (AM 570 LA Sports, KTNQ 1020)
The Yankees’ West Coast woes continue with what many would call an even harder opponent than their last: the Dodgers. After getting swept out of Oakland, the Yankees will look to get back on track tonight at Dodger Stadium, but it certainly won’t be an easy feat. The Dodgers have an astounding home record of 51-16 on the year thus far. The Dodgers and Yankees currently have the two best records in all of baseball.
James Paxton will get the nod for the Yanks tonight. He’s 9-6 through the year with an ERA of 4.53 but an impressive 141 SOs on the year. He’s on a bit of a hot streak, going 4-0 in all of his starts in August.
Hyun-Jin Ryu will continue his Cy Young campaign against an opponent he isn’t all too familiar with. The Yankees defeated Ryu the only time he’s faced them, but that was six years ago. He’s a different pitcher who currently boasts an incredible 1.64 ERA with a 12-3 record.
1. DJ LeMahieu (R) 2B
2. Luke Voit (R) 1B
3. Aaron Hicks (S) CF
4. Gary Sanchez (R) C
5. Gleyber Torres (R) SS
6. Gio Urshela (R) 3B
7. Cameron Maybin (R) RF
8. Brett Gardner (L) LF
9. James Paxton (SP, L) 9-6
The Yankees continue to seem like the favorite to win the AL East. The Rays are their closest contender, but them currently sitting at 8.0 games back towards the end of August lends itself to the belief that the Yankees will emerge victorious.
Only three Yankees have past exposure to Ryu, and none of them have faired well against the left-hander. Gregorious is 0-2, LeMahieu is 2-16, and Maybin is 0-10. The Yankees as a whole are hitting .276 against lefties on the year. They also boast that same BA on the road in general (.276)
Although he gave up four earned runs in just 5.0 innings in his last start against Cleveland, Paxton still picked up the win and is 4-0 in the month of August. In five interleave starts this year, Paxton has a 5.82 ERA and is 1-2.
1. Joc Pederson (L) LF
2. Max Muncy (L) 3B
3. Corey Seager (L) SS
4. Cody Bellinger (L) RF
5. Matt Beaty (L) 1B
6. Alex Verdugo (L) CF
7. Enrique Hernandez (R) 2B
8. Will Smith (R) C
9. Hyun-Jin Ryu (SP, L) 12-3
The Dodgers walked it off for the 12th time last night, cementing a sweep over the Blue Jays. Their record of 85-44 puts them at the top of the heap, and they could create some more separation by winning the series at home against the Yankees who are close behind at 83-46.
Not many bats in the Dodgers lineup have an extensive history against Paxton. Pederson is 1-3 with two RBIs, Martin is 1-9, and Gyorko is 1-5. with an RBI. That being said, the Dodgers have an OPS of .832 at home this year, but might get into some trouble with Paxton on the mound as they’ve struggled a bit against lefties all year, hitting just .253.
If the Dodgers are able to get any semblance of offense going tonight, though, they stand a fair shot of taking the series opener. Ryu has simply been lights out all year and is a likely candidate for the Cy Young award. He’s 9-0 at home this year with an ERA of 0.81 (yes, you read that correctly).
Yankees vs. A’s Betting Odds
The line is currently set at NYY +130 LAD -140 after opening at the same. In my opinion, the Dodgers at home with Ryu on the mound is a lock. It doesn’t matter that the opposition is the second best team in baseball. It also helps that the Yankees haven’t looked too great in their last three.
