New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays, 7/16/19 7:05 PM ET Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY, TV: New York (YES), Tampa Bay (Fox Sports Sun) Radio: New York (WFAN 660/101.9 FM, WADO 1280), Tampa Bay (WDAE 620 AM/95.3 FM, WGES 680)
Game two of a classic AL-East matchup is set to begin today at 7:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium. The Rays took last night’s game 5-4. Tonight it’ll be the veteran left-hander CC Sabathia taking the mound for the Yankees as Ryne Stanek suits up for the Rays.
Sabathia is 5-4 on the year with an ERA of 4.03. He’s fanned 71 on the year. In his last start before the All-Star break, he received a no-decision after throwing seven innings of three-run ball. This will be Sabathia’s fifth start abasing the Rays this year. He’s 1-0 with an ERA of 2.63 against them on the year.
Stanek, mainly used as an opener, has gotten 26 starts on the year. He’s fanned 46 over 41 innings pitched on the year, and the Rays are 17-9 in games he’s started. He has a 3.14 ERA on the year. In four appearances at Yankee Stadium in 2019, he has an ERA of 7.71 through 4.2 innings.

Despite losing yesterday’s game, the Yankees still seem to be the favorite to win the AL East. The Rays are their most realistic contender, so it would do the Yankees well to take at least one of the next two games from the Rays. In what has been an ultra-competitve AL East thus far, the Yankees have just looked like the superior team in all aspects.
Post All-Star Break, the bats of Judge, Encarnacion, Hicks, and Gardner have looked especially good. They’re all hitting above .300 since baseball resumed after the break. In that span, Encarnacion has gone yard twice with a total of 6 RBIs. Gardner and Judge are both hitting extremely well of Stanek historically, with Gardner posting an average of .444 off the right-hander and Judge .500.
As he continues to get up there in age, Sabathia’s performance is still solid for the Yanks. He’s 5-4 on the year having fanned 71 through 76.0 innings pitched. In four games pitched against the Rays in 2019, he’s posted an ERA of 2.63, letting up 18 hits through 24.0 innings pitched.

8. Mike Zunino (R) C
9. Guillermo Heredia (R) RF
SP. Ryne Stanek (R) 0-2
The Rays are in a bit of a no-man’s land at the moment. They’re playing well enough to still be in contention for the AL East, but it’s looking more and more like they’ll end up taking an AL Wildcard spot. At 56-40, that’s a frustrating place to be, but the AL East (and the Yankees especially) have just been so competitive thus far on the year.
Since the All-Star break, D’Arnaud, Lowe, Garcia, Meadows, and Brosseau have all been hot — hitting above .300. In 13 ABs, D’Arnaud has an average of .538 with an astounding OBP of .600. The bats were good enough to take last night’s game 5-4 against the Yankees, and if they can take the next two, it would certainly help with the AL East race.
Looking at the sheer numbers, the Rays being 17-9 in games that Stanek has started makes good case for the 27-year-old right-hander. He’s mixed in a number of openings and relief appearances on the year for a total of 51.2 innings pitched with an ERA of 3.14. In four appearances at Yankee Stadium, he has an ERA of 7.71 through 4.2 innings pitched,.
Yankees vs. Rays Betting Odds
The line is currently set at NYY -160 TB +144 after opening at the same. Taking Yankees -1.5 would give you odds of +125. I have to go with the Yankees in this one, as I just don’t see the Rays taking two in a row against them. On top of that, Stanek hasn’t looked great at Yankee Stadium on the year. The over/under is currently set at 10 runs, and with the hot bats of both teams, I’m going to suggest the over in this one.
