Matchup Preview

Game three of a classic AL-East matchup is set to begin today at 7:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees took last night’s game 8-3 to even the series out to 1-1. There’s two games left to be played including tonight’s contest between Rays’ righty Yonny Chirinos and the Yankees’ Domingo German.

Yankees Analysis

The Yankees continue to seem like the favorite to win the AL East. The Rays are their most realistic contender, so it would do the Yankees well to take at least one of these last two games from the Rays. With the series currently tied at 1-1, it’s getting to the point in the season where every game counts.

Post All-Star Break, the bats of Judge and Encarnacion have looked especially good. They’re both hitting above .400 since baseball resumed after the break. Judge is hitting .529 with 9 hits through 17 ABs with 1 HR, 3 RBIs, and 5 BBs in the last 5 games. Encarnacion has 3 HRs and 7 RBIs in his last 4 games played.

In his last outing against the Rays on May 10th, German allowed 5 hits and 3 earned runs but ultimately left victorious. He allowed 2 HRs and 2 BBs while striking out 5. His last go came on July 12th where he threw 6 innings of shutout ball against the Blue Jays, allowing just 3 hits and fanning 7.

Tampa Bay Rays Starting Lineup

1. Austin Meadows (L) DH
2. Brandon Lowe (L) LF
3. Willy Adames (R) SS
4. Ji-Man Choi (L) 1B
5. Christian Arroyo (R) 3B
6. Kevin Kiermaier (L) CF
7. Daniel Robertson (R) 2B
8. Mike Zunino (R) C
9. Guillermo Heredia (R) RF
SP. Yonny Chirinos (R) 8-4

Rays Analysis

The Rays are in a bit of a no-man’s land at the moment. They’re playing well enough to still be in contention for the AL East, but it’s looking more and more like they’ll end up taking an AL Wildcard spot. At 56-41, that’s a frustrating place to be, but the AL East (and the Yankees especially) have just been that competitive thus far on the year.

Since the All-Star break, D’Arnaud, Lowe, Garcia, Meadows, and Brosseau have all been hot — hitting above .300. In 17 ABs, Lowe is hitting .471 with 8 hits and 7 RBIs. In 3 ABs against German, Meadows has gone deep once. A small sample size, yes, but important to consider nonetheless as overall he’s 2-3 against the right-hander.

Chirinos has gone at least 6 innings in his past seven starts. His most recent start came against Baltimore which resulted in a win after spinning 7 innings of two-run ball. He’s 0-1 at Yankee Stadium through two starts on the year, but allowing a BA of just .225 with an ERA of 2.53.

Yankees vs. Rays Betting Odds

The line is currently set at NYY -164 TB +142 after opening at the same. The lack of line movement says one thing: the Yankees are expected to win this game. Even if they don’t, it’s still the “right” pick just by looking at the lineups both teams have going out today. With German on the mound for the Yanks, I have to agree with the line and say the Yankees take this one. I like Yankees -1.5 +116 today. The over/under opened at 9.5 runs and has now moved up to 10 runs, but with scores totaling 9 in the first game and 11 in the second game, your guess is as good as mine. I’m wanting to take the over but would have much preferred getting that in when it was set at 9.5.
