Vegas Golden Knights vs. New York Islanders
The New York Islanders have an excellent opportunity to get a second straight win under new head coach Patrick Roy tonight. Roy had an exciting debut, with the team taking down the Dallas Stars on a Bo Hovrat overtime goal to win the game 3-2.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin seemed revitalized playing under Roy, with the netminder recording a .953 save percentage. That was Sorokin’s best performance since January 4th’s 5-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes, so hopes are high that a new coach (and Hall-of-Fame goalie himself) will get the Vezina Trophy candidate back to his old form.
The Islanders might not be the best offensive team in the league (2.93 goals per game), but they’ve definitely got some players that can light the lamp. Brock Nelson leads the team with 20 goals, followed closely by Hovrat with 19. Defenseman Noah Dobson has been excellent at generating offense this season with 41 assists this year.
The Vegas Golden Knights are coming off a heartbreaking 6-5 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils. The team coughed up a 5-3 lead as Tyler Toffoli recorded a hat trick on the game-winning goal. Packing up after such a tough loss and hitting the road against another potential playoff team is a tall order. On the bright side, Jonathan Marchessault was playing at a high level throughout the night, scoring two goals and recording an assist. Marchessault has now recorded 5 goals in his past 4 games and leads the team with 22 on the year.
Losing Jack Eichel could also seriously effect this team going forward. Eichel is second on the team in goals (19), assists (25), and points (44), and his absence will begin to wear on this team.
Keep in mind that the Golden Knights are on an 0-6 slide on the road, being outscored 29-16 along the way. The Islanders also play much better at home, going 12-5-6 at UBS Arena so far this season. It’s going to be tough for the Golden Knights to shake off yesterday’s OT loss and get fully into this game, so taking the Islanders to win at home seems like a solid choice.
