There are 12 NHL matchups tonight, with no shortage of ways to bet each matchup. Here’s one play that Anthony Elio is liking for tonight.
Ottawa Senators vs. Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche will host the Ottawa Senators this evening in what should be an intriguing matchup. Both of these teams are coming off of disappointing losses from Tuesday, with Ottawa blowing a 3-0 lead to the Arizona Coyotes and the Colorado Avalanche losing 3-2 to division rival Chicago Blackhawks, who are currently tied for the least points in the league at 21.
The Sens will look for a first win under new head coach Jacques Martin following the dismissal of D.J. Smith. Overall, the Ottawa offense has been solid on the season, averaging 3.3 goals per game to go with 32.3 shots per game. However, special teams is becoming a concern, with the team converting just 18.35% of power plays. Ottawa has talent on offense, such as Tim Stutzle (team-leading 30 points) and Brady Tkachuk (team-leading 14 goals). The defense is another story, though, with Ottawa allowing an average of 3.44 goals per game and and going 73.03% on the power play kill. Projected goaltender Anton Forsberg has uninspiring numbers right now, with a .876 SV% and 3.23 GAA.
The Colorado Avalanche have been a tough team to wager on this season, mixing blowout wins with baffling losses. However, one thing is hard to deny: this team can score goals at home. In their last three matchups at Ball Arena, the Avs have outscored opponents 17-7. Nathan MacKinnon is on a 16-game points streak and is currently second only to Nikita Kucherov in total points. Valeri Nichuskin has seriously upped his game with 15 goals so far, two shy of his total from last season and well on his pace to break his all-time high of 25. Alexandar Georgiev is slated to start in goal, but his numbers have seriously dwindled throughout the season. Georgiev has allowed 3 goals per game in December with a 2-3 record.
The Avs on the puck line is definitely an attractive bet, but the struggles in goal make it a little bit more difficult to back them right now. However, with Colorado going 4-2 to the over recently and lighting the lamp on home ice, the over seems like the safe play tonight.
