Both the Boston Red Sox and Oakland A’s look to end losing streaks in tonight’s matchup and continue to try and turn around what have been disappointing starts to the 2019 season. Oakland is in the midst of a 9-game road trip, all of which they will be spending on the east coast. The A’s come into tonight’s game at the 14-16 mark, good for 4thin the AL West, while the Red Sox also come in at 4thin the AL East with a record of 11-17.
Both teams were swept in their last series by AL East teams: The A’s by Toronto and the Sox by Tampa Bay. Both teams lacked offensive support despite having generally good pitching. This goes contrary to the first part of each team’s season where they struggled on the pitching side but generally didn’t underperform offensively.
It should also be noted that the good pitching is likely to continue into tonight’s game. The A’s will be sending Frankie Montas to the bump, where he looks to win his 5thgame of the season. He’s been pitching quite well, coming in at 4-1 with a 3.10 ERA. He has little experience against Boston, however.
On the Sox side, they will be sending Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound. Despite starting the season slow, Rodriguez has been dominant in his last three starts. During his last time out, he allowed just two hits and a run while striking out seven over six innings against the Tigers.

Athletics Starting Lineup
Things were finally starting to look up for the A’s when they swept a three-game series against the Rangers a few days ago. However, they were immediately swept for the second time this season by the Blue Jays just three days later.
The sweep could have easily been avoided. They could’ve won yesterday’s game but the A’s usually solid closer, Blake Treinen, blew a three-run A’s lead in extra innings and then gave up the game-winning hit in what would end as a 5-4 Blue Jays win. A’s starter Chris Bassitt was solid through 7 innings, however, giving up just three hits and one earned run. On the offensive side, slugger Khris Davis went 2 for 5 with an RBI.
This will be the second time the A’s match up against the struggling Sox this season. Earlier in May, they took three of four games from Boston, winning two of the three in a dominant offensive fashion. They look to take advantage of the struggling AL East “powerhouse” and get to Rodriguez early while Montas rolls on the mound.

Red Sox Analysis
Win some, lose some, win some, and then lose some again. After starting the season horrendously at 6-13, Red Sox fans hoped things were turning around after a three-game series sweep against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, every time the Sox win a few it seems they are bound to follow with some losses.
After that series with the Rays, they lost their next two against the Tigers, then won another two against the Tigers, and then just recently lost both games of a two-game series against the Rays. Does this mean a win against Oakland will follow? Alex Cora can only hope so.
Despite the team’s early pitching struggles, the Boston pitching was generally pretty good against Tampa Bay. Both David Price and Chris Sale turned in good starts but neither received the run support needed to get the win. The Sox only scored one run in the first game and two in the second, but rookie Michael Chavis went deep which is nonetheless exciting. Another downside for the offense is that JD Martinez is currently injured and struggling with back spasms. At the moment he is being considered day-to-day, but the Sox certainly don’t want to rush him back onto the field. Dustin Pedroia also remains on the DL.
Eduardo Rodriguez looks to make tonight’s start his fourth consecutive strong one. Can he keep the Sox hopes of turning the season around a reality?
