It’s clear that Tyrese Haliburton is still trying to work himself back into a solid groove after he suffered a scary-looking hamstring injury several weeks ago. Since returning to the lineup (six games), Haliburton has averaged 13.7 points and 6.3 assists in just shy of 24 minutes per game. Haliburton is on a minutes restriction, and it seems likely that he will continue to be for at least the next few games. So, how have the Pacers fared with Hali in limited minutes? The short answer is “not well.”
The Pacers are 2-4 in their past six games, with a win at home versus the Houston Rockets (5-19 road record) and a road win against the Charlotte Hornets (10-41 record this season.) To be fair, two of those losses came on the road against New York and Boston, which are obviously tough matchups. However, there is still a concern in backing Indiana in this spot.
In that game against New York, the Knicks won by four points behind a 40-point outing from darkhorse MVP candidate Jalen Brunson. Between Brunson and the recent exceptional play from Donte DiVincenzo (29.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and four assists in his past six games), who has truly unlocked another level of his game, the Knicks have enough offensive firepower in their backcourt to keep up with the ‘Cers.
The Knicks have been the best rebounding team in the NBA this season, holding a total rebounding rate of 53.1%. This is impressive given the fact that Mitchell Robinson has missed much of the 2023-24 campaign. Isaiah Hartenstein has been phenomenal in a starting role and, while he will miss this game, the Knicks are a strong enough “team rebounding” squad that they will find a way to compensate in his absence. This idea becomes simpler against a Pacers team that ranks 26th in total rebounding rate this season and has ranked dead-last in this statistic over their past three games.
Lastly, New York is 15-10-1 against the spread at home and has no business being a six-point home dog. The Knicks are 8-2 in their past ten games, even without Julius Randle and O.G. Anunoby for six games apiece.
