Philadelphia Phillies vs. St. Louis Cardinals, 5/28/19 7:05 PM ET Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA, TV: Philadelphia (NBCSP, MLBN (out of market only)), St. Louis (FS-M) Radio: Philadelphia (94 WIP, WTTM 1680), St. Louis (KMOX 1120)
The NL Central/East series is set to begin today as the Cardinals will suit up to play the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park at 7:05 PM ET. The Phillies sit atop the East with a 1.5 game lead on the Braves. The Cardinals are currently four games behind in the Central.
Adam Wainwright, the right-handed veteran will take the mound for the Cardinals. He’s 4-4 on the year with a 4.82 ERA. In six starts at Citizens Bank Park over the course of his career, Wainwright has held batters to a .242 average and has thrown 2.56 strikeouts for every walk he’s issued. In his career, he’s 2-1 through six starts at Citizens Bank Park, with an ERA of 2.83.
In his first start since April 16 after being optioned to Triple-A, Nick Pivetta gets the nod for the Phillies. In just 18.1 innings pitched at the Major League level this year, Pivetta has given up 18 runs (17 earned) and is posting an 8.35 ERA through his four starts. In 37 innings pitched in Triple-A, Pivetta recorded 50 strikeouts in 37 innings of work leading up tonight’s game.
1. A. McCutchen , CF
2. J. Segura , SS
3. B. Harper , RF
4. R. Hoskins , 1B
5. J. Realmuto , C
6. O. Herrera , LF
7. C. Hernandez , 2B
8. M. Franco , 3B
9. N. Pivetta , SP
Coming off a devastating 9-1 loss to the Brewers, the Phillies look to get back on track in tonight’s game. The club is 7-3 in their last 10 and currently sits at the top of the NL East. The Phils took two of three against the Cardinals earlier in May, their two wins being 11-1 and 5-0.
Hoskins and McCutchen are currently red-hot, as they’re both hitting above .345 in their last six games. The rest of the Phillies match up well against Wainwright, as Harper and Realmuto are each hitting .333 off the right-hander through nine at bats, Harper having taken him yard once before. Segura has posted a whopping .467 avg off the veteran through 15 plate appearances.
The main concern for the Phillies will of course be Pivetta. The young right-hander had a tough start to the season which resulted in his demotion to Triple-A, and this is his first start since. He was 4-1 for the Iron Pigs with a posted ERA of 3.41 through six games. He doesn’t have a ton of experience against this Phillies lineup, but he has held Matt Carpenter to an average of just .200 in 10 at bats.
1. M. Carpenter , 3B
2. P. Goldschmidt , 1B
3. P. DeJong , SS
4. M. Ozuna , LF
5. Y. Molina , C
6. J. Martinez , RF
7. K. Wong , 2B
8. D. Fowler , CF
9. A. Wainwright , SP
3-7 in their last 10, the Cardinals are not having the start to the season they had been projected to. They currently sit at fourth in the Central, four games out of first. Coming off a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to lose the series against the Braves, the Birds will look to get some sort of winning pattern started to stay in contention in the Central.
Carpenter, Goldschmidt, and Bader are all hitting above .300 in their last five games. The Cardinals will need continued production out of Carpenter and Goldschmidt in the top of the order if they want any chance during this three game series against a tough Phillies team. Without a lot of reps against Pivetta, it’s tough to say where the Cards stand against the right-hander, but if they can jump on him early, he will undoubtedly get rattled as this is his re-entry to the majors.
Wainwright has had an abysmal month of May. In his last nine innings of work alone, he’s given up eight runs. In four starts, he’s only pitched past the fifth once. Unfortunately for the Cardinals in today’s game, he’s been much worse on the road. He’s 1-3 with an ERA of 6.75 outside of Busch Stadium, as opposed to 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA at home. Wainwright has held McCutchen to an average of just .182 through 33 at bats over the course of his career. Hernandez and Franco are both without a hit against the right-hander.
Phillies vs Cardinals Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Phillies -130 Cardinals +110 after opening at Phillies -117 Cardinals -103. I have to agree with the trend of the line movement on this one, as I just don’t see the Cardinals pulling this one off. Wainwright has been too shaky as of late, especially on the road. Even though Pivetta is fresh out of the minors, he still feels more likely to go out and have a good start than Wainwright. The over/under is currently set at 10. I’m leaning towards the over in this matchup, as neither pitcher has proven themselves to be able to limit runs.
