Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Clippers Preview

Tonight, the Phoenix Suns (11-47) will take on the Los Angeles Clippers (31-27) at Staples Center. The Clippers will be looking to sweep the Suns on the season and bump their current losing streak to 15 games. The Suns have not only lost 14 in a row, but they also are currently on a 10-game road losing streak. Phoenix’s last win came January 12 against Denver, while their last road win came on December 26 at Orlando.

This will be the final game of the NBA’s first half for both teams. The Clippers find themselves competing to get in the Western Conference playoffs, while the Suns (11-47) have one of the worst records in the league and have a 14-game losing streak.

The Clippers have dominated the Sun’s not only this season but have also won 11 straight dating back to April of 2016. The Clippers have also won 10 straight at Staples in the rivalry, with Phoenix’s last beating the Clippers there in December 2013.

Suns Analysis

phoenix suns

The Suns lost 117-104 on Sunday in Sacramento. However, they were able to debut the backcourt combo of Devin Booker and Tyler Johnson, which Phoenix is hoping will be their backcourt for years to come. Booker returned from a hamstring issue for Sunday while Johnson was just acquired from the Heat during the trade deadline.

Playing alongside Johnson for the first time, Booker had an efficient 27 points on 9-for-19 shooting. Johnson had three assists in the game to go with nine points and five rebounds. The bad news is that Johnson is questionable for tonight due to his right ankle.

After Saturday’s loss, Booker told reporters that he and Johnson need to get to know each other better saying, “I’m going to be at All-Star weekend, but right after that, I’ve got to touch a basketball and still polish up on things. I hope that everybody has that same mindset.”

The Suns will definitely need that mindset or else there’s going to be a lot of finger pointing in the desert.

Clippers Analysis

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers have alternated losses and wins in their last seven games. They are currently adjusting their lineup, which has seen many changes since the trade deadline. They’ve gone 3-0 against the Suns this season, but that was before they traded Tobias Harris and Avery Bradley earlier this month. Newcomers, Garrett Temple, and Ivica Zubac have been starting in their place.

Temple had 11 points and Zubac had 12 when the Clippers shocked Boston 123-112 on the road Saturday, where they overcome a 28-point deficit. However, they combined for just seven points Monday in Minnesota, and the Clippers lost 130-120.

The Clippers also picked up Wilson Chandler, Landry Shamet and JaMychal Green as part of the three trades they made at the deadline. Shamet has strengthened an already potent Clippers bench with 17 and 15 points in his last two games and shot 7-for-12 on 3-pointers. Green had his first double-figure scoring night for Los Angeles when he went for 11 points at Minnesota. While Chandler has yet to play for the Clippers because of a strained quad.

Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank tried to put a positive spin on the deals during a town hall-type gathering last week but admitted there will be nights like the one Monday in Minnesota. “We’re still going to do everything we can to make the playoffs,” he told Clippers fans, “but we’re honest, we’re realistic. There could be some short-term pain. But what we’re hoping is we’re able to then have a long run.”

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Clippers Betting Odds

The Clippers are 8.5-point favorites and are 15-12 at home and are 21-8 as a favorite. On the other hand, the Suns have a league-worst 4-25 record on the road and are 10-44 as an underdog. Safe to say it doesn’t look good for the Suns. The over-under for tonight’s game is currently set at 231.5 points. The money line opened at -400 for the Clippers but has shrunk to -375 after fluctuating constantly.
