Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks Matchup Preview (1/20/22)
Two of the hottest teams in the NBA face off in a monstrous Western Conference matchup. Phoenix will try and steal a win on the road from the red-hot Mavericks, who are winners of ten of their past 11 games while posting unbelievable defensive statistics. Dallas has done most of its work in those games without star forward Kristaps Porzingis, who certainly is an asset on offense and as a rim-protector. Porzingis has been back for three games from a lingering injury but has not looked the same as he did in late December when he posted superb numbers. In the four games leading up to his injury, Kristaps averaged 27.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists, proving that he can still put up huge stats. It will only be a matter of time before Porzingis has his rhythm back, and that will be a terrifying time for the Mavericks’ opponents. Meanwhile, Phoenix is also on a roll, winning its past four and seven of its past eight games. The Suns have kept their players healthy for the most part, which has been huge for their chemistry throughout the season; however, they will not have Deandre Ayton for this game, which could be the differentiator in the outcome. This bout should be unbelievably close the whole way and could very well come down to the last possession. Check out my favorite bets for this matchup below!
Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks Betting Odds
The Dallas Mavericks are scary right now and the absence of Deandre Ayton could change the entire outcome of this game. Without Ayton, Dallas has the size and rebounding advantage over the Suns. Phoenix still has Devin Booker, though, who has been playing out of his mind since the “Raptors Incident.” This game is like two missiles colliding, so it really could go either way. Personally, I will stay away from this one; however, if I had to choose, Dallas ATS would be my play.

Phoenix Suns Starting Lineup
PG: Chris Paul
SG: Devin Booker
SF: Mikal Bridges
PF: Jae Crowder
C: JaVale McGee
Phoenix Suns Analysis
Phoenix has had the longest winning streak in the NBA this season and the best record through the halfway point. Although many expected the Suns to be terrific again this year, I’m not sure they expected this type of dominance. They currently rank third in opponent 3P% (three-point percentage), second in defensive efficiency, second in opponent eFG% (effective field goal percentage), third in points per game, third in offensive efficiency, third in eFG%, and fifth in 3P%. In short, they will be a team that no one wants to see in the playoffs. If the Warriors drop a few more games during this slump that they are in, then the Suns could create some distance between themselves and every other team in the Western Conference. This team could find their way back to the NBA Finals if they keep this up and everyone stays healthy. They will be without Deandre Ayton in this matchup due to an ankle injury, but it is not a serious injury.
Dallas Mavericks Starting Lineup
PG: Luka Doncic
SG: Jalen Brunson
SF: Dorian Finney-Smith
PF: Kristaps Porzingis
C: Dwight Powell
Dallas Mavericks Analysis
Dallas is not a team you want to face right now in the NBA. It has won ten of its last 11 games, ranking in the top five in all major defensive categories during that span. The Mavs have held opponents to sub-50% shooting nights in a mesmerizing 21 straight games. Offensively, the Mavericks have stepped up significantly as well. Luka Doncic just dropped 41 points with 14 rebounds and seven assists in his last game, while Brunson and Porzingis are also dangerous at any given time. I certainly owe the Mavericks an apology; I did not think much of them at the beginning of the season and believed them to be too one-dimensional on offense and, in general, lackluster on both ends. With the emergence of Jalen Brunson, the Mavs now have a powerful third option on the offensive end, and as long as they avoid significant injuries, they should be a surefire playoff team.
Phoenix Suns vs. Dallas Mavericks Daily Fantasy Picks
Since I always write about Jalen Brunson and Luka Doncic for these previews, I would like to highlight another player with huge-game potential: Kristaps Porzinigs. Porzingis has struggled to shoot it from deep this season and has been quite inconsistent. On the season, Kristaps has averaged a respectable 20.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists with a shooting split of 45/29/87. However, in his four games at the end of December, Porzingis averaged 27.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists before he had to sit out with an injury. Porzingis has only been back from his injury for two games, and those games were mediocre for him at best, but eventually, Porzingis should find his groove. It may not be this game that Porzingis looks like he did at the end of December, but it should be sooner versus later, assuming he avoids further injury.
Devin Booker is riding an insane hot streak since his unfortunate interaction with the Toronto Raptors’ mascot and merits serious DFS consideration despite his high salary. He has averaged 37.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in his past three games on a 53/39/81 shooting split. This is a clear indicator that Booker is out for blood after getting trolled all over the internet for several days because he was arguing with a mascot about where he should or should not be during the game. Booker’s talent is undeniable, and it is evident that riding this hot streak should be the move for you right now if you play DFS.
