Portland Trail Blazers at Detroit Pistons Preview
The Detroit Pistons play host to the Portland Trail Blazers tonight, and the playoffs are firmly on the mind of both teams for very different reasons. While Portland has already secured a playoff berth, the Pistons are still in a fight to guarantee their spot.
Detroit is currently holding a winning record of 38-37 and occupies the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. They come into the game having won just four of their last ten games, despite not losing at home in the month of March. In fact, the biggest factor as to why they are in the playoff picture is largely thanks to their home record of 24-13.
Ahead of tonight’s game, Portland holds a very impressive 48-27 record which sees them sitting in the third seed of the Western Conference. The Blazers have been in red form, having only lost just once in their last ten outings. Portland’s form on the road over the course of the year has been very up and down, as their record of 19-18 suggests, and during March they have won four out of seven on when on their travels.
The season series is currently in favor of the Blazers, who lead 1-0 heading into the second and final meeting on the year between the two teams. In the first matchup which was just under a week ago in Portland, led by star point guard Damien Lillard, the Blazers finished on a 14-2 run in the final 4 minutes of the game to claim a 117-112 win.
Lillard finished with 28 points (9-of-16 FG, 6-of-10 3-PT), six rebounds and nine assists. Blake Griffin had an excellent game for the Pistons despite the defeat as he helped himself to 27 points (10-of-18 FG, 3-of-8 3-PT), two rebounds, six assists, and one steal.

Detroit Pistons Starting Lineup
Pistons defeated their playoff rivals Orlando Magic 115-98 in a game that they dominated start to finish. The win was mainly thanks to the newest starter on the team – Wayne Ellington, the shooting guard led all scorers as he finished with 25 points and three steals in 31 minutes, shooting 9-of-17 from the field for 56.2 percent. The big man duo of Griffin and Andre Drummond also put in big performances as they combined for 28 of the team’s rebounds.
As a team, the Pistons sank 46-of-86 field goal attempts on their way to 53.5 percent, while holding an inform Magic team to just 39.4 percent. Detriot was very solid defensively and did a great job on the defensive end as they tallied nine blocks to go with eight steals.
After overcoming their conference rivals, the Pistons snapped a three-game losing streak and given how close a handful of teams are to each other in the East, it was very important and much needed victory. Sophomore guard Luke Kennard says that the Pistons are aware of what’s at stake heading into the final few games, and they know what they need to do.
Kennard said post-game “Obviously we know it’s a fight right now between a few teams and those close, so each game is important from here on out. So, we know we have to take it up a level, especially in these last seven, so tonight is a big one for us.”
Portland Trail Blazers Starting Lineup
Tonight’s matchup sees the Blazers play in the second night of a back-to-back after the dispatched the Atlanta Hawks on the road last night. Portland claimed victory with a strong showing in the second half as they pulled away and cruised to a 118-98 win. All-Star point guard Damien Lillard led the way as he poured in 36 points, three rebounds, and seven assists. Forward Al-Farouq Aminu also had a strong game as registered 17, 11 and two, shooting 5-of-9 from the field (55.6%).
The Blazers were facing a young and exciting Hawks team, who since the All-Star break have been averaging 119.3 points per game which is the league’s second best. This was something Head Coach Terry Stotts appreciated post-game as he was very complimentary of the job his players had done.
“From a defensive standpoint, Atlanta had been on a roll scoring 120 or so a game since the All-Star break, so to hold them under 100 speaks a lot for our defense,” said Stotts. “First quarter we probably didn’t defend as well as we needed to, but after that, it was pretty good. Damian was terrific again, scoring and passing. I thought Enes did a nice job in the lane, both offensively and defensively. So, against a team that has been playing pretty well lately, it was a good win.”
Portland is now the hottest team in the league thanks to their winning streak of six straight and have improved their record vs Eastern Conference teams to 24-5.
