The Atlantic Coast Conference is the conference of quarterbacks in 2022. Paring it down to just two out of such a talented group proved to be quite the challenge, which is why I ended up with three All-ACC teams, unlike other conferences with just two. The ACC also has 15 teams, with tons of talent spread across them, so filling three teams didn’t prove problematic.
Sam Hartman earned the nod as the First Team quarterback after leading the best passing offense in the conference with 4,228 yards, the sixth-most in ACC history, and 39 touchdowns. He’s joined by A.T. Perry on the first team, a future NFL wide receiver with 71 catches for 1,293 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2021.
Leaving Devin Leary off the First Team was a difficult choice, but NC State landed two First Team defensive talents. Drake Thomas was a First Team All-ACC linebacker last year with 99 tackles, three interceptions, and four pass breakups as an elite defender against the pass and the run. He’s joined by teammate Tanner Ingle on the First Team, who also made the All-ACC First Team last season.
Miami is expected to have a breakthrough season under new head coach Mario Cristobal, and they had plenty of representatives on these teams. Offensive linemen Zion Nelson and D.J. Scaife Jr. are elite blockers, while Tyrique Stevenson is a lockdown outside cornerback. Leonard Taylor and James Williams are former five-star recruits on the Second Team, while Tyler Van Dyke and Ke’Shawn Williams represent the passing game on the Third Team.
Clemson had a down year in 2021, finishing outside the College Football Playoff for the first time. However, the Tigers still won ten games with several talented players on the All-ACC rosters. Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee, and Trenton Simpson are all future NFL talents, while Will Shipley remains a talented running back, despite his relatively inefficient 2021 season. Keep an eye on Tyler Davis as another defensive breakout candidate for Clemson – he’s on the Third Team here.
UPDATE: Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman has been ruled out indefinitely with an undisclosed medical condition. He still represents his program as the All-ACC First Team quarterback for now, but it’s unclear when he will return or if he will be able to play this season at all.
