Purdue vs. Maryland Betting Odds & Predictions (10/8/2022)

A week six matchup of College Football gives us a Big Ten game between two teams that have gotten off to a good start in the Purdue Boilermakers at the Maryland Terrapins.  Both of these teams are entering this game 1-1 so far in Big Ten play as Maryland enters this game 4-1 and Purdue is currently 3-2.  Purdue suffered close losses to Penn State and Syracuse, but have bounced back and last week got a huge win against a highly respectable Minnesota team that could be huge for their momentum continuing the season.  Maryland had no problem defeating Michigan State last week and their only loss came from the fourth ranked Michigan Wolverines in a close 34-27 game, but the Terrapins have continued to show penalty errors that could affect them in a close matchup like this one against the Purdue Boilermakers.  Let’s jump into this game’s matchup picks and predictions.

Purdue Vs. Maryland Odds

Maryland is riding a high off their 4-1 record plus playing at home and entering this game as slight favorites with moneyline odds of -160.  They are also entering as spread line favorites of -3 points.  Maryland has been playing so well due to their high-flying offense that has been able to hold its own with whoever they’ve gone up against.  They have scored 27 or more in all of their contests this year.  QB Taulia Tagovailoa has been playing great at getting connected with receivers as he currently has eight TDs on the season along with four INTs.  Rakim Jarrett and Jeshaun Jones both have over 200 receiving yards and two TDs, while RBs Antwain Littleton II and Roman Hemby have been fantastic at keeping the running game alive with over 250 rushing yards each.  Purdue has been no slouch on offense either however.  They have scored 28 or more in all of their contests except for last week’s 20-10 win against ranked Minnesota, when it was their defense that truly stepped up and stopped another high-powered offense in the Gophers.

The over/under total is currently placed at 58.5 points.  The high total makes sense for how both these teams have been able to score in large bunches in games.  Purdue and Maryland both have strong veteran QBs in Tagovailoa and Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell.

Purdue Vs. Maryland Prediction & Pick

My Pick: Purdue +3 (-110)

After Purdue’s big win against Minnesota, a team many were riding with to run the Big Ten West, I am going to stick with Purdue’s momentum and think they cover +3 against Maryland.  I expect this to be a tight game and could come down to the very end, which is why I think Purdue might be more equipped.  They have already had three down to the wire games they’ve played in, losing a tough game against Syracuse especially but then bouncing back beating FAU down late.  I think they will use that adversity they’ve played in to keep them on top, plus with a veteran sixth-year QB like Aidan O’Connell who’s been playing phenomenal they will be able to find a way to keep it close and possibly win.

Maryland’s penalty issues are also a concern here, especially in a game that could come down to penalty errors in the outcome.  Tagovailoa has four INTs on the year and Purdue’s defense has played quite well as of late.  They forced Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan to have three INTs when every game up to that he was having a standout year.  They also held the Minnesota running game only 47 yards, and if they can do the same against Hemby and Littleton II, it will certainly affect Tagovailoa and the Terrapins ability to effectively move the ball down the field.

As for the over/under total, I kind of like the over in this game as both of these teams have been scoring near 30 a game and this could definitely come around a 60 or more total.  The only hesitation I have is how effective Maryland’s offense will be if Purdue’s defense finds an answer for them early.

Aidan O’Connell Vs. Maryland Defense

One big matchup to look for is Aidan O’Connell against Maryland’s defense.  Maryland’s offense has been great but their defense has not been quite as dominant.  Although they did hold Michigan State to just 13 points, in their three previous games they allowed 20 or more points.  Aidan O’Connell has been able to get eight TDs this season even with missing a game due to injury.  He has over 1,000 passing yards already and has been on an ultimate tear his senior year.  I expect a big game out of him this Saturday on the road against the Terrapins.
