Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs Preview

We’re coming down to a photo finish in the Western Conference with just about 10 games remaining in the regular season. Southwest Division rivals meet tonight as the San Antonio Spurs travel up IH-10 for a matchup with the Houston Rockets.

The Spurs are in a four-way tie for fifth place in the West with a 42-30 record. They are 9-1 in their last 10 games, but lost their last game at home, ending a nine-game winning streak and 10-game home winning streak. The Rockets are currently in third with a 45-27 record. They are 8-2 in their last 10, but also lost their last game. A loss tonight would have them in a third-place tie with the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Spurs and Rockets last met on December 22. The Rockets prevailed with a 108-101 win as they were led by James Harden’s 39 points and 10 assists. DeMar DeRozan led the Spurs in the game with 28 points and eight assists.

Spurs Analysis

San Antonio SpursThe San Antonio Spurs seemed to be rolling at the right time, colling nine straight wins, including a big home win over the Golden State Warriors. Given the quality of opponents they beat on their win streak, on paper, a team battling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference like the Miami Heat didn’t seem to pose much of a threat.

Unfortunately for the Spurs, in the NBA, things don’t always go as they seem to be on paper. The Heat went up early, and while the Spurs battled back, two late turnovers snapped their win streaks.

“I think our mindset and what we’re trying to do is in the right place,” Spurs guard Patty Mills said. “And then we’ve been focusing on ourselves no matter who we’ve played against. So, we feel the mindset is on us, and our development and how we’re growing, and the things that we need to work on.”

In the 105-110 loss to the Heat on Wednesday night, both DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge struggled. DeRozan finished with just 16 points, but he also added 15 rebounds and six assists. Aldridge had 17 points, but the rest of the starting lineup managed only 13 combined points.

The Spurs bench has been key for them this season, and they were a big reason for the Spurs’ almost comeback on Wednesday, as all four second unit members that players, scored in double digits, led by 17 points from Marco Belinelli and Mills.

Rockets Analysis

Houston RocketsLike the Spurs, the Rockets had also been on an impressive streak, winning eight straight and 12 of 13 games. But they surprisingly lost on Wednesday night 125-126 in overtime against the lowly Memphis Grizzlies.

“We didn’t play with a lot of force for a long time,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said. “We just didn’t play with force. When you do that against any NBA team, you get beat.”

James Harden did his part to try and carry the Rockets again, as has been a common theme this season. He finished with 57 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Chris Paul had 18 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds, and Clint Capela added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Outside of that trio and Danuel House, the Rockets didn’t get enough production from the remainder of their starters and bench.

They also struggled defensively as Memphis’ main scorers had big nights against them. Jonas Valanciunas had 33 points and 15 rebounds and Mike Conley had 35 points and eight rebounds.
