San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks Preview
The San Antonio Spurs are 1-5 on their Rodeo Road Trip after losing a heartbreaker in the final seconds against the Toronto Raptors on Friday night. They’ll hope to end their road woes against the lowly New York Knicks tonight before they play a back-to-back in Brooklyn tomorrow to close the road trip.
They’ll need a win to avoid slipping further down the Western Conference standings, as they are currently tied for seventh with the Los Angeles Clippers with a 33-27 record. San Antonio is 5-5 in their last 10. The Knicks managed to get a win to snap their skid, but they come into tonight’s game with a loss. They are 11-48 on the season and are 1-9 in their last 10.
This is the first game of the regular season series between New York and San Antonio. In their last matchup, last year on January 2, the Spurs won 100-91. In the game, LaMarcus Aldridge led the Spurs with 29 points. To show how much has changed since then, Kawhi Leonard was the high assist man for the Spurs, Courtney Lee led the Knicks with 13 points and five assists and Kristaps Porzingis had nine rebounds. All three players on now on different teams.

Spurs Analysis
The Spurs got Derrick White back from injury last game, and he was asked to defend Kawhi Leonard. He did well on offense and defense, but he was on a minutes restriction that capped his minutes at 20.
Their game against the Toronto Raptors was basically the equivalent of a heavyweight battle, which is a good sign for the Spurs, who have struggled lately. Unfortunately, things did not end well for DeMar DeRozan’s first game back in Toronto since being traded. He played very well down the stretch but had the ball stripped from him late in the game with less than one minute remaining and with the lead in hand. He was stripped by the player he was traded for, Kawhi Leonard, and he finished with a dunk that pretty much ended the game for the Spurs.
While it was a tough loss, the Spurs were in it all game. They could’ve used more from LaMarcus Aldridge, but DeRozan scoring 23, and getting some scoring help off the bench from Marco Belinelli, Patty Mills, and Davis Bertans nearly offset the lost offense from Aldridge. The Spurs still have a ways to go on defense, but White being back should help that especially as he continues to work his way back up to playing full time.

Knicks Analysis
While the Knicks were able to snap their losing streak prior to the All-Star break with a win over the Atlanta Hawks, they struggled again on Friday night in a 104-115 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
While the Knicks have some capable scorers, especially with Emmanuel Mudiay back, they are going to be in a firefight with just about every team and will hope to win entirely on their offense because they haven’t shown the ability to get it done on the defensive end.
Against the Timberwolves, they were led by Damyean Dotson and Allonzo Trier, who had 20 points apiece. DeAndre Jordan was a monster on the boards and finished with 16 points and 19 rebounds. Rookie Kevin Knox added 18 points and Mudiay had 15 in his return.
