San Antonio Spurs vs. Atlanta Hawks Matchup Preview (2/11/22)

Two All-Stars will go head-to-head when Dejounte Murray and company travel a few states east to battle with the Atlanta Hawks, who have quietly played well in the past month. San Antonio is clearly in rebuilding mode, but that has not stopped Dejounte Murray from having an incredible season and averaging nearly a triple-double. Murray has helped the otherwise helpless Spurs win against Chicago and play Phoenix, Memphis, and Golden State competitively within just the past two weeks. The morale is undoubtedly higher in San Antonio after Dejounte Murray was named as an All-Star injury replacement, and it was well-deserved. The Spurs may not win many games, but these are the kind of games that they play extremely competitively.

Meanwhile, Atlanta has won nine of its past 12 games, with its only losses coming against the Toronto Raptors (twice) and Dallas Mavericks. Two of those three games were on the road, and those teams are not slouches by any means. In short, Atlanta has been incredibly impressive, and it will look to continue its uptrend at home against the tanking Spurs. Under the betting odds header, I cover the most likely outcome and which team I like betting on, so take a look!

San Antonio Spurs vs. Atlanta Hawks Betting Odds

This season, the San Antonio Spurs have been solid in covering games as road dogs, going 12-9. They will probably not win this game, as they do not have the firepower that Atlanta has; however, that does not mean they won’t scare the Hawks a bit. The spread is at eight right now, in favor of the Hawks, but I see it as a four-to-six-point game by the final horn. Dejounte Murray and company have played the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns within that margin recently and even beat the Chicago Bulls. In my opinion, an eight-point spread is too wide, so I’ll take the Spurs ATS.

San Antonio Spurs Analysis

San Antonio has plenty to be optimistic about, but not necessarily about this season. Dejounte Murray has ascended to All-Star status after an injury replacement had to be named. Murray is the perfect player to build a team around, and his near triple-double average and will to win indicates that. Additionally, the Spurs have Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and Joshua Primo, one of the youngest players in the NBA. Surprisingly, though, they decided to part ways with guard Derrick White but were able to secure a first-round pick, Romeo Langford, and Josh Richardson in return. That is a pretty solid haul and further contributes to the rebuild they have finally committed to. The Spurs will have to play lockdown defense on the perimeter for this game. Poeltl matches up well with Clint Capela and Keldon Johnson with John Collins, but if the Hawks get open looks from behind the arc, it won’t matter.

Atlanta Hawks Analysis

Atlanta has turned things up defensively, which has made its superior team three-point shooting look even better on the other end of the floor. The Hawks rank second in the NBA in 3P% (three-point percentage) and eighth in eFG% (effective field goal percentage) but had struggled defensively for the first half of the season. In the past several weeks, Atlanta has improved on defense, and while it is far from perfect on that end, its strides show in the results. The Hawks have won nine of their past 12 games, only losing to the Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors (twice.) Those are by no means terrible losses and further prove that the Hawks have developed much more consistency on a game-to-game basis.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Atlanta Hawks Daily Fantasy Picks

The morale in San Antonio is just a bit higher now after Dejounte Murray was named as an injury replacement in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. Many people, including myself, thought Murray should have been on the team initially, but voters did not. Luckily, he will be an All-Star now, and that relief should be significant for Murray, who has posted nearly a triple-double average this season. More specifically, Murray has averaged 19.5 points, 9.2 assists, and 8.4 rebounds per game while also contributing two steals. His three-point percentage is a bit rough, but we can forgive it because of how effective he is everywhere else on the floor. Murray should be leaned on heavily in this game, especially on the road, so look for him to have a massive night in terms of fantasy scoring.

It should be evident by the fact that he was named an All-Star starter, but Trae Young is quietly having one of the best seasons, statistically, in the NBA. Young has posted an average of 28 points, nine assists, and four rebounds per game on 46% from the field and 38% from three. These are phenomenal shooting statistics for a player who sometimes pulls from 30-35 feet! Young started the season slowly but has since put together a memorable season. The one real knock on Young is that his team has not won enough this season, but they have been solid since January 17th, when they started an impressive win streak. Now, Atlanta sits at tenth place in the Eastern Conference, with an outside chance of squeaking into the post-season if it keeps this up. Young has been putting up substantial shooting numbers during this span, shooting 42% from behind the arc. This has led to others shooting better and, consequently, finding defensive motivation. Young is an expensive DFS player, but it’s hard to pass him up in a matchup like this.
