San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers 8/5/20: Starting Lineups, Betting Odds (Matchup Preview)

Matchup Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers (8-4) will be in at Petco Park again tonight to take on the San Diego Padres (7-5). Tonight will be the final game of a three-game away series for the Dodgers. Los Angeles dropped the first game of the series to San Diego by a score of 5-4 thanks to their pitching and three home runs from the Padres. The Dodgers were able to bounce back the next day and defeat the Padres 5-2 in a comeback win thanks to stellar performances from Dustin May and A.J. Pollack. With both teams in a solid position to make a run at the postseason, getting this series win would be huge for either side. Taking the mound for the Dodgers tonight will be Ross Stripling, who has played well this year. Stripling is 2-0 on the year with a 2.92 ERA and nine strikeouts. Those are certainly some respectable numbers, but Stripling is not the ace for this team. The Padres will be starting veteran Garrett Richards, who has had an up and down career in the MLB. He joined the Padres last season following eight years with the Angels. Richards currently has a 3.38 ERA with 12 strikeouts on the season. Each game in this series has been close, and I expect these two teams to play another exciting game tonight.

Padres Analysis

san diego padres
After taking the first game against the Dodgers by only one run, the Padres gave up five late runs to lose last night. Each of the two games played between these teams has been low-scoring, and the Padres are going to need to score more than two runs to keep up with this Dodgers team. Although Los Angeles boasts an impressive starting lineup, they have been held to five or fewer runs in each of the last two games. If Padres want to ensure a big series win, they will need their bats to get to work tonight against Ross Stripling. The Padres have been led offensively this season by the up-and-coming Fernando Tatis Jr., Wil Myers, and 23-year-old Trent Grisham. Tatis has been hitting .277 with three home runs and 11 RBIs, Myers has been hitting .282 with three home runs and nine RBIs, and Grisham is hitting .273 with four home runs and seven RBIs. While those statistics might be nice, the Padres have been missing the production they expect from their 300-million-dollar man. Manny Machado has been hitting .217 with two home runs and seven RBIs. If the Padres want to take down the Dodgers and continue to push for the playoffs, they will need Machado to hit better than .217. As for their pitching tonight, Garrett Richards needs to play very well to keep them in the game. The Padres pitching has been solid so far in this series, but Richards will need to throw a great game if they want to win.

  6. Corey Seager (L) SS
  7. A.J. Pollack (R) LF
  8. Joc Pederson (L) DH
  9. Will Smith (R) C

Dodgers Analysis

los angeles dodgers
After beating the Padres in a come from behind win last night, the Dodgers would love nothing more than to close out this series with another win. To do so, they can’t always rely on a late offensive surge to put them ahead. The Dodgers need to be the aggressors and try to get some runs across the plate earlier. Even though they haven’t scored a ton in the last couple of games, this team is capable of doing so. Mookie Betts, A.J. Pollack, and Corey Seager have been outstanding for the Dodgers this season. Betts is batting .289 with two home runs and six RBIs, Pollack is hitting .364 with three home runs and six RBIs, and Seager is hitting .356 with three home runs and seven RBIs. Just like the Padres, the Dodgers’ star player hasn’t been producing either. Last year’s NL MVP Cody Bellinger is only hitting .184 on the season with two home runs and only four RBIs. Bellinger also needs to start hitting better if the Dodgers want to overcome their postseason woes this season. As for their starting pitching, I think that the Dodgers should feel confident in Ross Stripling. Although he is facing some talented players, he has been solid in both of his starts this season. Overall, this should be a great matchup tonight.

Padres vs Dodgers Daily Fantasy Angle

For the daily fantasy angle for tonight’s game, I’m going with A.J. Pollack. He might not be the biggest name in this star-studded Dodgers lineup, but he has been playing lights out as of late. Pollack is hitting an outstanding .364 on the season with three home runs and six RBIs. He is coming off of his best game of 2020 thus far last night against the Padres. Pollack was huge in helping the Dodgers pull off the comeback win, hitting a home run and sending in two RBIs. Pollack has stepped up for this team with Cody Bellinger currently in a hitting slump. The Padres are also throwing Garrett Richards tonight, who isn’t their most consistent pitcher. I could see Pollack (and/or other Dodgers) having a great day batting today. Try throwing in Pollack to your starting lineup in fantasy if you have him.

Dodgers vs Padres Betting Odds

Dodgers Odds: -136
Padres Odds: +115
Over/Under: 7.5

The oddsmakers favor the Dodgers in tonight’s third and final game of their series. Overall, I believe that the Dodgers have the edge in this matchup, but it is close. Each game of this series has come down to the wire, and I could see that happening again. The first two games of this series were also low scoring. However, the over/under is only 7.5 runs. I could easily see this game surpassing seven total runs, so I would take the over if I were betting this game. As for who will win, I want to say the Dodgers thanks to them having the pitching advantage in this matchup. However, I could see this game go either way tonight.
