Today, the San Diego Padres will travel to the Bronx to start their interleague series against the New York Yankees. New York just finished a three game series against the Kansas City Royals, where they won both games of the Saturday doubleheader by 7-3 and 6-5. However they lost yesterday in a 10-inning heartbreaker after coming back from a 7-1 deficit for a final score of 8-7 on a walk-off hit. Today the Yankees will have decide really quickly who their starting pitcher will be.
On the other hand, San Diego is coming off a road set against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Padres won the first game 6-3 and the second 19-4, but would get shut down in a 10-1 loss yesterday. If the Padres would have won, they would’ve had their first six-game winning streak in nearly six years yesterday Today San Diego will trot out Matt Strahm in the start, who’s season statline over 50.0 innings is 2-3, with a 3.06 ERA, 41 Ks and eight walks. Strahm has never faced the Yankees and will be also making his first interleague start.

Yankees Starting Lineup
The Yankees have been rolling as of late swepping the Baltimore Orioles and nearly doing the same to Kansas City. However yesterday the Royals won the finale of a three-game set 8-7 in 10 innings. Domingo German was on the hook for a loss but the Yankees rallied from a six-run deficit where they scored three runs in the ninth before Kansas City won with a walkoff single.
The Yankees are 4-1 in their last five games played on Monday, 40-16 in their last 56 in game one of a series, and also possess a 58-23 record in their last 81 home games after a road trip of a week or more. Like they’ve had to do all year, Aaron Boone will need to scramble for a while as they try to patch the injury holes in their lineup, meaning we’ll probably see plenty of Yankee relief pitchers. The Yankees have yet to announce a starter for this game. The rotation spot belongs to CC Sabathia, but he was put on the injured list Thursday with inflammation in his right knee.
Offensively, Gleyber Torres smacked a three-run homer after going 0 for 9 in the first two games of the series against Kansas City. Torres did a great job hammering Orioles pitching, hitting .465 with 10 homers versus them, but against everyone else he has only three homeruns ad is batting .240. New York is 12-4 in its last 16 home games and opens a seven-game homestand in the Bronx with this contest.
Padres Starting Lineup
Unlike the Milwaukee Bucks, the Padres were able to win two of three in the city of Toronto. So manager Andy Green can push his starting pitchers back a day since rookie left-hander Chris Paddack got scratched late from their 10-1 loss to Toronto with a stiff neck. However Green has chosen to stay on rotation and move Paddack to Wednesday’s series finale. All that means is Matt Strahm will get the start, and will be hoping to collect a win in back-to-back starts for the first time in his career. Strahm got a win against Arizona on Tuesday, giving up two solo homers and two other hits in six innings of a 3-2 victory.
Strahm has pitched real consistently lately sporting a 4-1 record in his last five starts. He’s also 4-1 in his last five starts on grass and when he has five days’ of rest. Strahm had a rough start to the year on April 1st when he gave up five earned runs in 2.2 innings. However since then, he hasn’t given up more than two earned runs spanning over eight starts. In his last six outings he’s had five quality starts where he’s giving up exactly two earned runs in each game. Strahm is a converted reliever who’s allowed two runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts, needing only 69 pitches to work his six innings.
Hitting wise playing the Yankees is nothing new for new star Manny Machado, who’s also hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games. Machado played the Yankees 96 times as an Oriole hitting .276 with 22 homers. 45 of those games were at Yankee Stadium where he hit .289 with eight homers. The Padres almost had their first six-game winning streak in nearly six years yesterday
Yankees vs Padres Betting Odds
San Diego’s has a 11-23 record in their last 34 Monday games. Even though Strahm started the season with a career mark of 10.37 strikeouts per nine innings. He’s also pitched more efficiently going at least six innings in five of his last six starts. Strahm told the Padres official website that “You can’t get an out in one pitch if you’ve got to strike someone out with three.”
