San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers Matchup Preview (1/22/22)
The NFL’s Wild Card weekend did not disappoint fans as upsets, blowouts, and last-minute shenanigans turned the tides for many teams. The San Francisco 49ers took over the Dallas Cowboys with a controversial play call to end the game in a 23-17 victory. The team now faces the most feared opponent in the NFC, the Green Bay Packers. The Packers landed the number one seed in the NFC, so they were excused from the Wild Card Weekend showdowns. Instead, they received a bye week to rest and prepare to take on the 49ers in the Divisional Round of the 2021 NFL postseason. The match is set to be played at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Saturday, January 22nd, at 7:15 PM CST. The 49ers better be prepared to take on the only team in the league that has not lost at home all season in freezing weather as low as 0℉. The Packers may be one of the top teams in the league, but don’t count out the 49ers just yet, because it should be an electric matchup in Round 2.
San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers Betting Odds
When they have the home-field advantage, the Green Bay Packers are not a team you want to disregard. They are the only team in the NFL who have gone undefeated at home all throughout the 2021 season. Their deafening fan base and the freezing temperatures make it very difficult for opponents to keep their composure. However, this season has shown us never to underestimate an underdog. Throughout the 2021 NFL season, the underdogs have covered the spread 52.6% of all games, and away underdogs have covered 53.8% of games. Even in the last matchup for the 49ers, they overtook the favored Dallas Cowboys and beat the spread with plenty of extra room. When the Packers and 49ers met in Week 3 of the regular season, the 49ers were able to cover the +3 spread by losing 30-28. For this meeting, the Packers are favored, yet again, with a spread of -5.5, which is a 2.5 increase in better odds. The home-field advantage of the Packers will make a huge difference in the spread and should be an important factor when making betting decisions. The 49ers are given the spread of +5.5, but they have covered the spread eight times in their last ten weeks. The 49ers have been on a hot streak of taking over big powerhouse teams like the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys. Based on the 49ers’ impressive record in the latter half of the regular season and their previous performance against the Packers, I project this game will be closer than most expect.
My Prediction: Packers Win 31-27, 49ers Cover, Over 47.5

San Francisco 49ers Analysis
The San Francisco 49ers were not expected to make the 2021 NFL postseason, but a last-minute win against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18 secured their place, and they are not letting their opportunity pass. Last week they swept the Dallas Cowboys in a 23-17 victory and have shown all the signs that they have the skills to potentially take over the Green Bay Packers. Their discipline on both offensive and defensive fronts allows them to continue drives for significant progress. A lot of the San Francisco team’s strength counteracts the weaknesses of the Green Bay Packers that can give them the edge in this matchup. The pass-rush option available to the 49ers with huge threats on both options can leave the Packers on their heels and unable to stop legends like Elijah Mitchell and Deebo Samuel.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has two of the best weapons on his side of the field. Both Elijah Mitchell and Deebo Samuel highlight weaknesses in a defense and create huge plays for their team. Mitchell was handed the ball 207 times for 963 yards in the regular season, while Samuel had 77 receptions for 1,405 receiving yards. Against the Packers, this combo will be hard to read as both players have efficient rushing and receiving abilities to trick any defense into mishandled coverage. The Packers defense allows an average of 21.8 points per game, and the combination of the rush and pass option of the 49ers may stir up trouble for the NFC front runners. When you throw tight end George Kittle into the rotation, there becomes almost no way to provide adequate coverage on every threat. There will have to be sacrifices in the defensive plan to cover Deebo Samuel downfield and guard a rush from Elijah Mitchell, so the short slant route of George Kittle will be wide open. Garoppolo will have to find the right defensive reads to see which receiver is in single or soft coverage to fully take advantage of the Green Bay defense to get an early lead in this matchup.

Green Bay Packers Analysis
Lambeau Field is a notorious place where away teams come to meet their end. The Packers have successfully played a perfect season while at home with their intense fan base and harsh weather on their side. The San Francisco 49ers gave the Green Bay team a run for their money with a two-point margin that could’ve compromised the Packers’ fire. The key to success for the Packers falls in their ability to outsmart the 49ers’ defense. After last week’s performance against the Cowboys, the Packers should be well aware of the pressure and the intense coverage the 49ers can provide. Veteran quarterback Aaron Rogers has been against his fair share of difficult defenses, but he will be challenged in his reading ability and his quarterback IQ against this defense.
Luckily, Aaron Rogers has one of the best wide receivers to trust downfield. Rogers has connected with Davante Adams 123 times in the entire 2021 season for 1,553 receiving yards. The connection between these two Packers is almost unmatched in the league, leading to the second-most receptions and third-most receiving yards for a wide receiver. Adams will need to be diligent on his routes against the 49ers and create optimal space if he wants successful completions against their aggressive defense. It’s very probable that the 49ers are going to put their best pressure and coverage on Adams to prevent astonishing plays downfield, so this can open up opportunities for Allen Lazard. Lazard has been one of the quieter receivers in the league, but he is one of the mightiest. Lazard only has 513 receiving yards this year, but Rogers gives him the best looks for scoring drives. The 49ers’ defense cannot forget to account for #13; otherwise, they might be in some serious trouble. The combination between these two receivers makes an unbeatable rotation. Both are great route runners with impressive speeds and football IQ, making it incredibly difficult for even the best defenses to guard. If the 49ers can’t stop these combinations in this game, Green Bay will have their chance at the NFC title.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers Daily Fantasy Picks
This matchup is full of star players that have been key to any fantasy league. Deebo Samuel and Davante Adams are both in the top five receivers in the league with yardage stats over 1,400 receiving yards each. Both players are the backbone of a good offense and can elevate any team to near perfection. This matchup will come down to whichever defense will most successfully stop their opponent’s star receiver. In both cases, it seems as if the defenses can be fairly matched, so all eyes will be on which receiver can make the best maneuvers for the most yards. Either way, you can’t go wrong placing faith in either player, for they almost always pull through for their fans.
