Matchup Preview
The first and last place team in the AL West will duke it out in Seattle to begin the four game series. The Astros are 7-3 in their last 10 and the Mariners are 2-8. The Mariners hot start to the season has proven to be unsustainable as they’ve fallen back significantly as the year has gone on. Right handed Corbin Martin will take the hill for the Astros as the southpaw Wade LeBlanc gets the nod for the Mariners.
After striking out nine batters in his MLB debut on May 12, Corbin Martin has cooled off significantly in his last three starts. He’s 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 5.51 with only 16 Ks (7 over his last three starts). In those last three starts, he’s given up eight walks and sixteen hits.
Wade LeBlanc is 2-2 on the year with an ERA of 6.99. The Mariners haven’t yet disclosed who it will be, but there will be an opener preceding LeBlanc. LeBlanc is 1-1 against the Astros over his career with an ERA of 5.44. Unless something completely unforeseen happens, this game isn’t shaping up to be a pitchers’ duel, as LeBlanc is 0-2 with an ERA of 10.22 since returning from the IL.

5. D. Santana , RF (R)

8. T. Beckham , SS (R)
9. S. Long , 2B (S)
Mariners Analysis
Currently the 6th worst team in baseball, the Mariners are looking to at least keep up with the Astros to start off this four game series. Encarnacion and Smith are both hitting upwards of .299 in the last seven days. The Mariners’ bats have no experience against Miley, but this game will mark the first of likely many divisional matchups against the right-hander.
LeBlanc is 1-1 at home this year with an ERA of 8.31. While most of the current Astros lineup has absolutely crushed him, one thing he can boast is holding Bregman to a .182 average over 11 at bats. Similar to the Cubs’ current situation with Jon Lester, LeBlanc has been struggling immensely since coming off the IL. The sooner he can get back on track, the better, but I don’t see that happening against the ‘Stros.
Continue to check the Mariners’ lineup page (linked above) to see who gets the nod to be the opener for LeBlanc.
Astros Starting Lineup
1. J. Mayfield , SS (R)
2. A. Bregman , 3B (R)
3. M. Brantley , LF (L)
4. Y. Gurriel , 1B (R)
5. T. White , DH (R)
6. J. Reddick , RF (L)
7. R. Chirinos , C (R)
8. T. Kemp , 2B (L)
9. J. Marisnick , CF (R)
Astros Analysis
The Astros currently have a comfortable 8.5 game lead at the top of the AL West, but that doesn’t mean they should get complacent. They certainly haven’t thus far, as they’re 7-3 in their last 10 and playing excellent baseball. Fisher, Bregman, Gurriel, and Brantley are all hitting .300 or above in the last seven days.
The Astros’ pitching only gave up a total of seven runs in their most recent three game series against the Athletics. Martin’s rough last three gos aren’t very promising, but LeBlanc isn’t looking much better and the Astros are looking much better than the Mariners on the offensive side. If Miley can make it through 6-7 innings and only give up a few runs, the game likely won’t even be close.
Reddick is hitting LeBlanc exceptionally well, posting a BA of .467 with one home run through 15 at bats. Marinsnick also has a long ball against the left-hander and is hitting .556 through nine ABs. The only two Astros who have faced LeBlanc before and haven’t put up good numbers against him are Bregman and Chirinos.
Mariners vs Astros Betting Odds
The line is currently set at Mariners +110 Astros -130 after opening at Mariners +114 Astros -134. With two struggling pitchers on the mound, it’s easy to select the team with the better offense to take the game, and that’s the Astros. I don’t think the Mariners stand a chance in this game. The over/under is set at 9.5 runs, and I’m leaning towards the over because of the ERAs of both LeBlanc and Martin.
