Seattle Seahawks vs. Los Angeles Rams Matchup Preview (12/21/21)
This Sunday, in an NFC West rivalry game, the Seattle Seahawks are headed to Los Angeles to take on the Rams for their second matchup of the season. In week five, these two teams went head to head and the Rams beat them, injuring Russell Wilson in the process and sidelining him for three more games. There is definitely vengeance to be had here on the account of Wilson. The Seahawks are 5-8 on the season and while playoff chances still remain slim for them, they are on a two-game winning streak and seem to be picking it up after losing eight of their first eleven games. The Rams on the other hand looked the best that they have all season on Monday night against the Cardinals despite having four starters missing from their lineup. They came out on top against the winningest team in football right now, and have risen to 9-4 on the season. Both teams are on a two-game winning streak that consisted of one low-caliber team and one high-caliber team, so the momentum and energy in this game should be pretty even, but if the Rams see the return of the four starters they lost against the Cardinals, it will be hard for Seattle to take this one.
Seattle Seahawks vs. Los Angeles Rams Betting Odds
In this division rivalry game, the Rams are the 5-point favored team with a point total of 43.5. This comes as no surprise as the Rams are playing some of the best football we have seen from them all season long and put up 30 points against a very talented Cardinals defense.
They are 6-7 against the spread this year and 2-3 when they’re the home favorite, neither of which are super promising for betters. The Seahawks are 7-6 on covering this year and 2-1 as the away underdog, which is a little more promising. Despite having one of the worst defenses in the league, Seattle has allowed less than 50% of redzone drives to end in a touchdown, which has helped them in covering this year. Still, both teams have hit the over just twice in their last five games so the under could still be a good bet this week.
My prediction: Rams win 28-24, Seahawks cover, over 43.5

Seattle Seahawks Analysis
The Seahawks are on a two-game winning streak, their longest and only multi-game winning streak of the season, which is grounds for applause. Granted, one of those two games was against the Texans so let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but they did take down the 49ers, which was a huge statement game for them. If they win these next three games, two of which are against the Bears and the Lions, they’ll be .500 on the season, a true Christmas miracle.
Tyler Lockett has now joined the great Steve Largent in the Seahawks record books as just the second receiver in franchise history to have three straight seasons with 1,000+ receiving yards. He has 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns over just 11 catches in the last two games. This is partially thanks to Russell Wilson who seems to be making the long-awaited comeback from his finger injury, dialing in his decision-making that he has been missing. But perhaps the biggest surprise offensively for this team was the emergence of Rashaad Penny who ran for two touchdowns and a career-high 137 yards last week. With Chris Carson out of the picture, Penny has emerged as a strong candidate for RB1.
Defensively, the Seahawks allow more total yards and passing yards than anyone else in the league but are able to control the red zone and don’t concede many points. They have also been able to control the run game in their last two games, which is a step in the right direction. They are however out Jamal Adams which is a big hit defensively for them, especially against a strong Rams offense that likes to throw the ball. They have Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks holding it down on this side of the ball, but against a super talented Rams team, the secondary has their work cut out for them, especially after seeing them exploit the Cardinals defense the way that they did.

Los Angeles Rams Analysis
Last week, the Rams had one of their most impressive performances of the year despite missing several starters which included Jalen Ramsey and Tyler Higbee. Matthew Stafford threw for 287 yards, 3 touchdowns, a 77% completion rate, and 139.2 passer rating. He is now 102 yards away from 4,000 passing yards this season. Cooper Kupp was normal – making uncatchable catches and moving his offense down the field to victory over one of the best teams in football right now. He is now leading all receivers in receptions, yards, and touchdowns this year. He will undoubtedly cause problems for this Seahawks secondary.
Odell Beckham Jr. and Van Jefferson have also been aerial threats for the Rams – OBJ has caught a touchdown in his last three games and is clearly starting to make himself comfortable in the Rams playbook. Unfortunately, he has joined several of his teammates on the Covid protocol list and his attendance is unknown for this week’s game.
This defense is still solid – and last week they proved it. They picked off Kyler Murrary twice and Aaron Donald alone had three sacks, which takes their team total in sacks to 36 on the season (the fifth-most in the league) a further testament to their strong defensive line. Donald and linebacker Leonard Floyd have a combined 18 sacks on the season. This duo will be an issue for Seattle’s weak offensive line. Jordan Fuller joined his teammates on the Covid list as well and will be missed in the secondary if he doesn’t make a return for Sunday’s game. Despite having a super solid defense, they allow 56% of red zone drives to end in a touchdown.
This team beat the Seahawks in week five but lost to the 49ers in week 10, who the Seahawks beat two weeks ago. The Rams are definitely the better team, but I wouldn’t count Seattle completely out of the race on this one.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Los Angeles Rams Daily Fantasy Picks
Tyler Lockett is normally a great pick for a solid wide receiver, but if Jalen Ramsey returns from the Covid list, then it would pose a pretty tough matchup for him. DK Metcalf hasn’t been targeted much this season because they’ve found success with Lockett, so he may be a good pick for the week as defensive playbooks will likely look to shut down Lockett.
You really can’t go wrong with anyone on the Rams team but with OBJ possibly out, it opens up more opportunities to target Van Jefferson when they aren’t looking for Kupp. He proved himself last game, recording a touchdown and 58 yards over two catches.
