Seattle Seahawks vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Matchup Preview (10/17/21)

Seattle suffered a severe loss when Russell Wilson was knocked out last week after a finger injury to his throwing hand. Wilson could miss at least the next four games, if not more. The Seahawks have Geno Smith backing up Wilson; he looked pretty solid last week. However, there is no denying that Smith is a downgrade from Wilson, who has spent years and years with that offense in Seattle. The impact of Smith replacing Wilson is quite significant, especially considering it is on the road against a Steelers defense that has allowed the tenth fewest points in the NFL. The Seahawks haven’t been quite as explosive offensively as many thought, as they only average 24 points per game. It’s hard to imagine the Smith-led Hawks putting up more than that against an above-average Steelers defense. On the other hand, Pittsburgh is dealing with several significant injuries at the wide receiver position. Even so, the Steelers should have no problem scoring against Seattle, who has a horrendous defense.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Odds

  • The Facts:

Pittsburgh (-210 Moneyline) is a favorite over the Seahawks (+180) at Heinz Field. The spread has the Steelers at -4.5, while the total sits at 42.5.

  • The Opinion:

In the end, Wilson’s inability to play against the Steelers will be the deciding factor. This would be a barnburner even with Wilson playing; however, the Steelers will be playing at home and should give Geno Smith some trouble. While Seattle will still put a few points on the board, it won’t be able to stop even Pittsburgh’s offense as it gives up the most yards per game in the entire NFL. Pittsburgh is also trending in the right direction after beating the Denver Broncos and hanging 27 points on them.

  • My Predictions: Steelers win 24-16, Steelers cover -4.5 (-110)

Seattle Seahawks Analysis

Russell Wilson’s finger injury is extremely unfortunate for the Seahawks. The injury is equally as rare as he hasn’t missed a football game in near a decade of playing. It will undoubtedly impact Seattle’s efficiency on offense as there is a substantial drop in quality of play with Geno Smith; although, he did play reasonably well in the last game. Even with Wilson, Seattle had been an underwhelming offense relative to what it is capable of producing. The Seahawks are 13th in the NFL in points per game and 18th in yards per game. Many would think that with an elite quarterback, several terrific receiving options, and a versatile running back, that the Seahawks would be a top-tier offense. Now, with Smith under center, it is hard to imagine they will manage even those stats. Nothing against Smith, but scarcely does an offense get better when their best player goes down. Defensively, there’s nothing to discuss except that they give up a substantial amount of yards per game: 450.8 yards, to be exact. If they give that amount up to the Steelers, then it won’t be too close of a game.

Pittsburgh Steelers Analysis

Pittsburgh has had an interesting season. First, the Steelers beat the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 1. Many people were astonished that the Bills would lose that home game as they are a fantastic team with Super Bowl potential. However, then Pittsburgh lost three straight games against the Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, and Green Bay Packers. While it wouldn’t be expected to win all of those games, it certainly should win one or two. Then, the Steelers beat a tough Broncos squad last week and put up 27 points, a season-high. It may end up being an up-and-down season for the Steelers this season, but right now, they are up. Despite having several key receivers who are banged up, their defense is still infinitely better than the Seahawks’ defense.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Daily Fantasy Picks

Pittsburgh is dealing with a substantial amount of injuries at the wide receiver position. JuJu Smith-Schuster is out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, and Chase Claypool and James Washington are dealing with lingering issues. Diontae Johnson may be the only healthy and reliable receiver for Pittsburgh in the game against the Seahawks, which means Big Ben will be looking his way even more than usual. While he only had a measly two receptions last game, this is an excellent “buy low” opportunity. Plus, he still scored a touchdown last week. I could see Johnson putting together a two-touchdown game against a pitiful Seahawks secondary.

Keep an eye on Chris Carson’s injury status throughout the week. If Carson cannot go, Alex Collins will again be in a prime position to get a lot of touches for the Seahawks. Last week, he got 15 touches and got two touchdowns out of them. While his efficiency was not spectacular, the Seahawks will still have to lean on him. This game will be close, and Seattle won’t rely solely on Geno Smith’s passing to win the game, so Collins remains a viable play.
