Tennessee Titans vs. Los Angeles Rams Matchup Preview (11/7/21)
This matchup has shifted dramatically throughout the week, but it should remain an exciting Sunday Night Football matchup between two of the best teams in the NFL. The Titans likely lost Derrick Henry at least for the remainder of the season to a foot fracture, and it will be difficult for them to replace his presence in the offense. We know Matthew Stafford and the Rams have an elite offense, but their defense should now be even better with the addition of future Hall of Famer Von Miller. These two teams are headed in opposite directions – will that play out in the result of this matchup?

The Pick
After the news on Derrick Henry and Von Miller earlier in the week, the betting public has been all over the Rams in this matchup. LA is now up to an eight-point favorite on some sportsbooks, and while that’s a huge spread, I’m confident in the better team getting the job done at home. Matthew Stafford will have his way with a mediocre at best Titans’ secondary, and Von Miller and Aaron Donald will take advantage of a weak Tennessee offensive line. Give me the Rams with the points.
My Predictions: Rams win 34-24, Rams cover, over 54 points

Tennessee Titans Analysis
It’s difficult to overstate how important Derrick Henry was to the Tennessee offense. He has 219 carries for 937 yards and ten touchdowns this season, and it will be several games before he gets surpassed in any of those categories. Despite an underperforming offensive line and injuries to the team’s wide receivers, the Titans have scored 28.4 points per game this season, the sixth-most in the NFL. Ryan Tannehill has been mediocre this season as he ranks just eighth in QBR. Still, he’s undoubtedly going to take a step back without Henry demanding opposing defenses to stack the box. A.J. Brown is getting healthier and more productive with every game, but the more significant issue for the Titans is an offensive line that has allowed 24 sacks, the fourth-most in the NFL. That’s a recipe for disaster against the Rams, whether or not Von Miller is available this week, and Aaron Donald will tear apart the middle of the O-line.
Defensively, Tennessee has struggled this season as they rank 20th in the NFL in defensive DVOA. Harold Landry has been excellent in the pass-rush with a team-leading 8.5 sacks and 15 QB hits, but the secondary has been exposed all season outside of Kevin Byard. Tennessee has allowed the ninth-most passing yards per game as Caleb Farley and Kristian Fulton remain on Injured Reserve. Tennessee’s pass defense was a major issue last season, and while they attempted to resolve it with some additions, it’s remained a problem spot. Matthew Stafford should be able to throw the ball as much as he wants against this team with Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods overwhelming the secondary, and that’s a massive part of my confidence in taking the over in this game.

Los Angeles Rams Analysis
Matthew Stafford deserves more love in MVP conversations as he ranks first in QBR and EPA, second in passing yards, and has thrown for 22 touchdowns to just four interceptions while the Rams are 7-1 on the season. Cooper Kupp is emerging as one of the frontrunners for the Offensive Player of the Year award with a league-leading 924 receiving yards and ten touchdowns through eight games. No team has had any hope of slowing down this elite tandem, and the Titans aren’t about to be the first. Robert Woods has produced more lately and found the end zone twice last week. Darrell Henderson has also been excellent, and he ranks fourth in the NFL in Football Outsiders’ Effective Yards metric, turning DVOA into a per-attempt figure. LA has also allowed just eight sacks, tied for the fewest in the NFL, with one of the best offensive lines in the league.
LA’s defense hasn’t been as elite as its DVOA league-leading offense, but it’s been solid in its own right. Awe-inspiring has been the secondary’s ability to maintain strong play despite a long-term injury to Darious Williams, a significant player for them. A rookie fourth-round pick, Robert Rochell deserves a ton of credit for his high-level production in filling in as a starter. With 25 sacks so far, the Rams have one of the best pass-rushes in the NFL and then added Von Miller to that group. Aaron Donald is one of the best defensive players in the NFL, as is Jalen Ramsey. This defense has all of the capability and renowned talents in the world, and it should start to perform better over the second half of the season. With the Titans’ offense not healthy, the Rams’ defense has a significant edge.

Tennessee Titans vs. Los Angeles Rams Daily Fantasy Picks
The Rams-Titans game is projected to be one of the highest-scoring matchups on the Week 9 slate, making it an exciting game to run single-game DFS lineups during. The real question is always who your captain should be, and I’m rolling with Cooper Kupp, the #1 scorer at wide receiver this season. If you want to get different, selecting Matthew Stafford as your captain and including Robert Woods in your lineup is an exciting way to pivot off Kupp. Van Jefferson is the low-cost, high-upside play for the Rams. On the Titans side, Ryan Tannehill provides some value, and A.J. Brown is the clear best play on the team. Adrian Peterson and Jeremy McNichols provide value, but I’d rather go with McNichols in DraftKings’ full PPR scoring format. The Rams’ defense is also an intriguing play against an injured Tennessee offense.
