Matchup Preview

Toronto will enter this series after going 4-6 in their past ten after taking the weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. They currently sit in 4th place in the AL East and 20.5 games back of the New York Yankees. Nobody expected Toronto to make much noise this season and they’ve played exactly to expectations. New York snapped their 8 game winning streak and dropped the final game of a four game set against the Astros. They sit a comfortable 4.5 games up over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.

The Toronto Blue Jays send Aaron Sanchez (3-9) to the mound as they’ll look to continue improving their trade pieces. Their top trade pieces remain tonight’s starter Aaron Sanchez, ace Marcus Stroman, and closer Ken Giles. Offensively, they look to continue developing their young stars and helping Vladamir Guerrero Jr. continue his development as baseball’s former top prospect.

Though the Yankees weren’t able to complete a four game sweep of the Astros, they remain 6-1 during their current homestand. The offense did their job against Justin Verlander by scoring 3 runs in his time on the mound but their pitching was simply terrible. J.A. happ gave up 8 runs in only four innings which left New York behind early. Tonight, veteran CC Sabathia (4-4) will be pitching for the Yanks as he’s fresh off his 250th career win from his last start. They’ll look for him to start a new winning streak.

4. Cavan Biggio (L) RF
5. Freddy Galvis (S) SS
6. Randal Grichuk (R) CF
7. Rowdy Tellez (L) 1B
8. Brandon Drury (R) 3B
9. Danny Jansen (R) C

Blue Jays Analysis

toronto blue jaysThe young Toronto Blue Jays lineup hasn’t found it’s stride yet this season. They ranked in the bottom half of the league and close to last in a few offensive categories. In yesterday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, their offense was clicking on all cylinders, tagging starter Rick Porcello for 5 runs. Leading the offense was Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Rowdy Tellez who had 3 and 2 hits, respectively. Trade candidate, Marcus Stroman, was very impressive in 6 innings of work. He only allowed 6 baserunners and prevents Boston’s bats from doing any damage.

The Blue Jays theme this season has been youth and the excitement around Vladimir Guerrero Jr. after much preseason and early hype, he has yet to establish himself as the star he was projected to be. Randal Grichuk and Teoscar Hernandez have had the best track record against CC Sabathia. Grichuk has a .273 batting average in 11 ab’s and Hernandez has hit .300 in 10 ab’s. Otherwise, this will be the first time for many of the Jay’s youngsters to see Sabathia this year.

Aaron Sanchez has clearly struggled this season, and especially of late. His last two games, he’s only gone 3 ⅔ innings without recording a single strikeout. Talk about a struggling pitcher on a struggling team. Things don’t look like they’re going to get easier as Sanchez heads into a matchup against the now healthy New York lineup. Though his career ERA against the Bronx Bombers sits at 3.24, his season ERA currently stands at 5.49. Sanchez will need to be close to perfect to have a chance in this matchup.

Yankees Starting Lineup

1. DJ LeMahieu (R) 2B
2. Aaron Judge (R) RF
3. Luke Voit (R) 1B
4. Gary Sanchez (R) C
5. Giancarlo Stanton (R) LF
6. Edwin Encarnancion (R) DH
7. Didi Gregorious (L) SS
8. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
9. Aaron Hicks (S) CF

Yankees Analysis

new york yankeesThe Yankees revealed their closest full-health lineup on Sunday with the exception of Brett Gardner playing left field instead of Giancarlo Stanton who received an off day. Historically, shortstop Didi Gregorious had the most success against Houston’s starter Justin Verlander though he wasn’t able to record a single hit in 4 at-bats. In fact, DJ LeMahieu was the only New York batter who found any success as he record 3 of the team’s 6 hits yesterday afternoon. The pitching side struggled as J.A. Happ gave up 8 runs and was given his 4th loss of the year.

The Yankee bats have had very mixed results against Aaron Sanchez in the past. It’ll almost be a guarantee that Brett Garder won’t play a second day in a row as his career average against him stands at .158. Struggling similarly is Aaron Judge who holds a career batting average of .125 against Sanchez. Coincidentally, Didi Gregorious will enter the second game in a row with the most past success against an opposing starter. He carries a .375 average against Sanchez and looks to improve on his 2019 average of .239 after getting off to a late start.

CC Sabathia earned his 250th career victory in great fashion, besting the Tampa Bay Rays last Wednesday. He went 6 innings of one run ball and tacked up 7 strikeouts on the way. However, this season’s hasn’t been as pretty as his last start. His 2019 ERA sits at 4.14 and struggled in his four prior starts before his last one against the Rays. He’ll look to continue his farewell season and hopefully find better control on his pitches. Against the Blue Jays, he will likely have more room to work with though limiting walks will be a high priority.

Blue Jays vs Yankees Betting Odds

The line is currently set at Blue Jays +117, Yankees -117.
Based on the quality of pitching in today’s matchup, there’s likely be some runs being scored. Aaron Sanchez has been pitching poorly as of late and a matchup against the Yankees is the last thing he needs. CC Sabathia will look to find better control of his pitches and limit his walks. Offensively, the Blue Jays rookies will have first crack at seeing Sabathia for possibly the last time. Meanwhile, New York’s lineup will look to have another great offensive game after scoring 4 in a game started by one of the league’s best pitchers in Verlander on Sunday afternoon. The over/under is set at 10.6.
