Washington Football Team vs. Buffalo Bills Matchup Preview (9/26/21)
The 1-1 Washington Football Team will take their talents to Western New York in Week 3, as they prepare to play the 1-1 Buffalo Bills.
These two teams have played five times since 2000, with Buffalo winning four of the five meetings and out-scoring Washington 113-67 in the process. In 2019, a Sophomore Josh Allen took on Washington at home and dominated them, winning 24-9.
While the Football Team barely escaped with a Week 2 victory, they’re now 0-2 against the spread (ATS) this season. With Ryan Fitzpatrick sidelined due to injury, Washington will look to Taylor Heinicke again this week.
Meanwhile, the Bills bounced back in a big way in Week 2, shutting down the Dolphins 35-0. It was the second-worst shutout loss by the Dolphins franchise at home, being topped only by a 43-0 defeat to the Patriots in 2019.
The Bills have opened as whopping 9.5-point favorites. So, can the Football Team avoid moving to 0-3 ATS? Or will the Bills build more momentum and record their second straight blowout victory?
Washington Football Team vs. Buffalo Bills Betting Corner
Analyzing this game, I’ve come up with three conclusions:
- The Buffalo defense is overvalued.
- The Washington defense is overvalued.
- The Washington offense is undervalued.
This is all pushing me towards the over.
Although it’s crazy to say this about a unit led by Heinicke, I think the Bills defense is about to see a step up in offensive talent. There’s a chance the Bills defense takes a step back in Week 3.
Meanwhile, Allen and Co. haven’t looked excellent through two weeks, but the Bills should be able to shred the Football Team’s defense. Especially after Jones and Herbert have the past two weeks.
Right now, the total is set at 46. I think this is a tad low, and I’m expecting a higher-than-expected scoring affair in Week 3.
My predictions: Bills win 35-25, Over 46 points

Washington Football Team Analysis
There are plenty of things to harp on the Football Team about. But Heinicke is not one of them.
Ron Rivera should start considering if Heinicke should be the full-time quarterback in Washington. In a little less than two full games of action, Heinicke has completed a whopping 73.8% of his throws for 7.5 yards per attempt and 7.8 air yards per attempt
He shredded the Giants’ defense in this Week 2 matchup. Specifically, to Terry McLaurin. McLaurin was targeted 14 times and recorded 11 receptions, 107 yards, and a touchdown. Given how he’s played so far, McLaurin is turning into one of the better receivers in the game.
Heinicke gave the Bucs everything they could handle in the Wildcard game last year, then almost willed his team to victory late in Week 1, and then did this in Week 2. Surprisingly, it’s been the Washington defense that has let down Heinicke and the offense, rather than the other way around.
The defense managed to sack Daniel Jones four times, but they also allowed him to toss for 250 yards at 7.8 yards per attempt. On top of that, the Giants mediocre offense gained almost 400 yards in total, and they outpaced the Football Team in yards per play (6.1 to 5.9).
Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio looked ill-prepared for Jones’ rushing ability. Jones added 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground, averaging over 10 YPC on the attempts.
For a supposedly elite defense, those are poor numbers. This performance comes after they allowed Justin Herbert to shred them for almost 340 yards. Through two weeks, Washington has averaged 9.5 yards per pass play but allowed 10.77.
If the defense could get its act together, perhaps Heinicke will lead Washington on another playoff run. Until then, this team is fade material.

Buffalo Bills Analysis
I’m not sure what the Bills are yet. They laid an egg in Week 1 vs. Pittsburgh, and while they managed to blow out the Dolphins, Miami was playing with Jacoby Brissett under center. I think the Dolphins are overrated either way.
It doesn’t feel like Josh Allen has gotten going yet. He looked better against Miami, but he managed just 179 passing yards. Through his first two games, Allen has completed just 56% of his passes at a measly 5.3 yards per attempt, both stats that rank among the bottom five quarterbacks through Week 2.
The Bills managed 35 points in Week 2, but they also averaged less than five yards per play. Luckily, the defense sacked Tua Tagovailoa and Brissett six times while holding them to combined 2.9 yards per pass play.
The defense was quite good in Week 1 as well. The Steelers managed just 252 total yards against Buffalo, as Ben passed for well under 200 and the ground game averaged just 3.6 YPC.
However, I have mixed feelings about this team. The offense has looked poor against two above-average defenses, while the defense has looked elite against two terrible offenses. Given what we know about the team, I’m not sure if they’re deserving of being almost 9.5-point favorites.

Washington Football Team vs. Buffalo Bills Daily Fantasy Picks
In a game that I expect to go over, there should be plenty of DFS opportunity on both sides. However, I’m not exactly sure where that’s best placed.
Both quarterbacks are solid options, but Allen is probably the better bet. Given how good Jones was on the ground in Week 2, Allen has big upside potential with his rushing ability.
Terry McLaurin is an interesting prospect, although he might be a bit pricey given his Week 2 performance. If you’re going to target any Washington skill player, I’d look towards J.D. McKissick, who was a huge part of the passing game in Week 2.
Interestingly, Sterling Shephard has been the most productive Giants’ receiver through two weeks. He’s recorded 25% of New York’s Target Marketshare, with Darius Slayton and Kenny Golladay both receiving only 17% each.
Shephard is going to be my top pick-up for DFS lineups in this game.
