A great first week to college basketball. There were some big games and a few upsets to start us off. Here are this weeks college basketball power rankings.
1. Michigan State 1-1
The Spartans will be fine despite their season opening loss to Kentucky. They are still rated the number one team in the country, according to Kenpom, and they still have Cassius Winston.
2. Duke 3-0
Vernon Carey had an impressive debut against Kansas last week. Trey Jones needs to be the foundation of this Blue Devils team.
3. Louisville 2-0
The Cardinals get off to hot start on the season that includes a win over Miami. Jordan Nwora is averaging 22 points per game to start the year.
4. Kansas 1-1
Kansas should have been focusing more on ball handling in the offseason. Turnovers were a huge part as to why they lost to Duke on opening night. Rock Chalk is 305th in turnover percentage, according to Kenpom.
5. Kentucky 2-1
Kentucky lost to Evansville. You can’t lose to Evansville.
6. Gonzaga 3-0
Gonzaga is averaging close to 100 points per game to start the season. They’ve also played some of the worst teams in the country. One concern for the Zags, defending three point shots.
7. Villanova 1-0
Weird to see Villanova be carried by a freshman, but that’s how this season is going to go. Don’t be surprised if Jeremiah Robinson-Earl is considered for the Naismith Award.
8. North Carolina 2-0
Still very early in the season, but Cole Anthony is the number one rated player in the country, according to Kenpom. How far can Anthony carry the Tar Heels this season?
9. Maryland 2-0
This Maryland team is very good, and it showed in their win over a tough Rhode Island team. The problem is Mark Turgeon is coaching this squad.
10. Virginia 2-0
Virginia beat Syracuse 48-34 to start the season. Don’t be surprised with more games like this from the Cavilers.
11. Texas Tech 2-0
TJ Holyfield is going to need to hold down the Texas Tech squad as they are loaded with freshman this year. Jahmi’us Ramsey is one of the freshman and is averaging 16 points per game.
12. Florida 1-1
The Gators had an ugly loss against Florida State, as they shot 28 percent from the field that game. Florida will bounce back from it, this offense is still good.
13. Oregon 3-0
Oregon is off to a hot start with a win over Memphis. This team is going to be very competitive this year, and they can hit the three.
14. Ohio State 2-0
Ohio State got a big win against in-state rival Cincinnati. They have another tough test against Villanova on Wednesday. Let’s see what this Buckeyes team is made of.
15. Seton Hall 2-0
Seton Hall will get their test Thursday night against Michigan State. This team is going to be very good in the Big East, but let’s see how they compete against Sparty.
16. Arizona 2-0
The Wildcats had an impressive win over Illinois on Sunday. Nico Mannion is going to be a force against teams this season.
17. Memphis 2-1
Memphis is in huge trouble is James Wiseman becomes in eligible to play. The crazy thing is, Memphis might still play him, which could cost them a postseason ban
18. Baylor 1-1
Baylor had an ugly meltdown last week against Washington. Not an ideal look for a team that could be a dark horse in the Big-12 this season.
19. Purdue 1-1
Despite their loss to Texas over the weekend, this Boilermakers team is going to be very good again. They just need to avoid unnecessary losses to beatable teams.
20. Xavier 3-0
The Musketeers received a scare from Mizzou on Tuesday. They remain undefeated thanks to their defense.
21. LSU 1-0
Look for Emmitt Williams and Trendon Watford to carry this LSU team. They have a few non-conference games where they can prove how good they are.
22. Auburn 2-0
Auburn is another team that has turned the ball over quite a bit to start the season. They also need to work on their three point game as well.
23. Marquette 1-0
Markus Howard needs to carry Marquette again this season. It will be interesting to see this Golden Eagles team competes against Purdue on Wednesday.
24. Tennessee 1-0
Another team that is going to be tested throughout non-conference play. Let’s see what Rick Barnes squad can do up against tough competition.
25. Florida State 1-1
Florida State bounced back after their season opening loss to Pittsburgh with a win over Florida. Hopefully Trent Forrest can remain that guy for the Seminoles.
