Early season tournament actions said a lot about the teams participating. Michigan and Dayton proved the nation that they’re legit, as some of the nations top teams experienced a few losses. Here are this weeks college basketball power rankings
1. Louisville 8-0
The Cardinals are the best team in the nation, and proved it with a dominating 58-43 win over Michigan. They are the best team, and have the best player in the country in Jordan Nwora.
2. Kansas 6-1
Kansas comes back to Lawrence after winning the Maui Invitational. The Jayhawks have been red hot since losing their season opener a month ago.
3. Kentucky 6-1
Kentucky has been on a roll since their loss to Evansville. Four players are averaging over double-digits for Calipari.
4. Virginia 7-0
The best defense in the nation continues to do their thing against offenses. Vermont is still the only team that has scored over 50 points against the Cavilers.
5. Ohio State
Ohio State has the next best defense behind Virginia, and has had similar success limiting opponents on offense. Kaleb Wesson is starting to look like a top player in the nation.
6. Gonzaga 8-1
The Zags were on a tear this season before getting blown out by Michigan in the Battle 4 Atlantis final. Gonzaga is still really good, and will prove it as the season continues.
7. Maryland 8-0
Maryland cruised their way to through the Orlando Invitational. Anthony Cowan is averaging 17 points per game, as he is a big reason for the Terrapins success.
8. Duke 7-1
Duke has rebounded nicely after their home loss to Stephen F. Austin last week. They had a big win over Michigan State as Vernon Carey and Trey Jones scored over 20 points.
9. Michigan 7-1
The Wolverines bursted onto the scene last week after beating North Carolina and Gonzaga to win the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. Unfortunately, their run came to a hualt against Louisville, but this team has definitely proved themselves so far.
10. Michigan State 5-3
The season is still very young, but the Spartans haven’t gotten off to the best start. There losses are to Kentucky, Virginia Tech, and Duke, but it’s still not what Tom Izzo wanted to see.
11. North Carolina 6-1
The Tar Heels played some sloppy basketball in the Battle 4 Atlantis last week. They lost the the champions, Michigan, in the semi-finals, and didn’t even play their best in their wins either.
12. Arizona 9-0
Arizona finds themselves undefeated early on in the season thanks to their freshman players. They’ll be tested by a very good Baylor team this week.
13. Auburn 7-0
Auburn will get back to business this week after they won the Legends Classic. Samir Doughty leads the team with over 19 points per game.
14. Oregon 6-2
The Ducks two losses came against North Carolina and Gonzaga. As soon as N’Faly Dante is eligible, this team is going to go to another level.
15. Florida State 7-1
Florida State has won seven straight, and have wins over Florida, Tennessee, and Purdue. This team could make some noise in ACC conference play this winter.
16. Seton Hall 6-2
Seton Hall rebounded on the consolation side of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. They allowed Oregon to comeback on them last week, but this team will be fine in the Big East.
17. Memphis 6-1
The Tigers are hanging on without James Wiseman. They beat Ole Miss and NC State who both rank in the top-75 of Kenpom.
18. Baylor 6-1
Baylor is on a nice run as of late. They beat Villanova in the Myrtle Beach Invitational and won the tournament. Jared Butler leads the team with over 19 points per game.
19. Dayton 6-1
Dayton showed the country that they’re one of the best teams in the country last week in Maui. They dominated Georgia and Virginia Tech, and took Kansas to overtime.
20. Villanova 5-2
Villanova has sort of struggled coming out of the gate. Their two losses are to Baylor and Ohio State, which aren’t bad losses by any means.
21. Tennessee 6-1
The Volunteers suffered their first loss against Florida State, but will get to prove themselves again over the next few weeks. Jordan Bowden leads the team with 15.3 points per game.
22. Butler 8-0
Butler is off to an impressive start with four wins over top-75 teams, according to Kenpom. Kamar Baldwin leads the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game.
23. Arkansas 7-0
The Razorbacks find themselves 7-0 this season with the 10th best defense in the nation, according to Kenpom. They haven’t been tested yet, but they’ll be able to hang around some tough opponents.
24. Xavier 7-1
The Musketeers defense has been one of the best in the nation. Their one slip up was against Florida, but they’ll get back on track in December.
