We’re a little past the one-quarter mark in the MLB season. So far, just like any other season, we have seen some surprise teams, both good (Tampa Bay Rays) and bad (Washington Nationals). Placing futures bets get easier as the season progresses as you learn which teams are actually good enough to win a title.
Making a bet on a team to win the title before the season starts is when it is most difficult. Nobody knows how good or bad a team is going to turn out before they even play a single game. However, once you get a nice chunk of the season underway, it gives you an opportunity to learn about each team and see what their strengths and weaknesses are.
Around this time of year is my favorite time to start placing futures bets on who will win divisions and the World Series. Teams like Tampa Bay have been one of the best in baseball up to this point, and nobody was giving them a real chance before the season started. Now Tampa Bay has the seventh best odds in the league to win the World Series, according to the FanDuel Sportsbook. Pennsylvania sports betting is open for business. Fanduel is our top ranked PA Sportsbook, so if you’re looking to place a bet take a good look. Ok, back to business. Other teams like the Oakland Athletics, who currently have the 16th best odds, figured to possibly be a contender before the season started.
Of course, there are still a lot of games left in the season and anything can happen. At least now though, we know which teams look to be legit and which look to be pretenders. The season is still young enough to get good odds, even on teams like the Houston Astros, who are still coming in at +420.
Which Top Ten Team Provides The Best Value?
The teams with the best odds are:
The first thing you want to do when placing a futures bet, like picking the World Series winner, is seeing which teams have the best chance of getting into the playoffs. Once the playoffs begin, it is like a new season and anything can happen. So let’s look at the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays.
All three teams are in the same division and of course, only one of them can win their division and get a berth into the playoffs. That means two of these teams will be fighting for the two Wild Card spots. Both Wild Card teams can certainly come out of the same division, although isn’t very common. Even if they do, they will have to play each other in one game to see who advances in the playoffs. Risking a futures bet on a team who might be playing a one-and-done game isn’t the greatest bet.
The American League East is perhaps the best division in baseball in terms of its top three teams. It will be a tough division to win and one of those three teams is likely to fall behind the other two as the season progresses. The best case will be playing one Wild Card game to stay alive in the playoffs.
The Twins sit ahead of the Cleveland Indians in their division. The Dodgers currently have the biggest division lead, but only provide +270 value. Among the ten teams with the best odds at this point in the season, the Twins and the Dodgers are the two best two choose from. The Twins have one of the best runs per game average in baseball and their pitching has a great ERA. They currently sit at +800.
Best Middle-Of-The-Pack Value
11. Cleveland Indians
12. St. Louis Cardinals
13. Colorado Rockies
14. Washington Nationals
15. Texas Rangers
16. Oakland Athletics
17. Arizona Diamondbacks
18. Cincinnati Reds
19. New York Mets
20. San Diego Padres
At +10000, when looking at the Pirates you’ll notice their offense isn’t that great, but they have above average pitching. Come playoff time, a good pitching staff can win you games. The Pirates may not be the best all-around team in the league, but at +10000 they could provide sneaky value at this point in the season.
Best Longshot Value
21. Los Angeles Angels
22. Pittsburgh Pirates
23. Chicago White Sox
24. Seattle Mariners
25. Baltimore Orioles
26. Detroit Tigers
27. Kansas City Royals
28. Miami Marlins
29. San Francisco Giants
30. Toronto Blue Jays
If you like to take big risks, you can go ahead and put some money on the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, or Miami Marlins at +100000. Although you shouldn’t count on getting a return on your investment. Two teams in this grouping provide great value and are teams that could certainly be playing come October.
