Favorites

Rory McIlroy is the current #1 in the Official World Golf Rankings. It is no surprise that he is an early favorite to win not only this tournament but other majors as well. The Harding Park Course is a course that has a lot of birdies available for the taking. Players with big drives have a huge advantage on this course and McIlroy has one of the biggest drives in the game. After a disappointing 50th-place finish in last year’s PGA Championship, McIlroy should improve drastically this year in a course that really fits hits playing style.

Jon Rahm has a fairly big drive of his own. The 6’2″ 220 pound Rahm is currently #3 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Rahm already has three top 10 finishes in the four events he has played this season. After finishing 11th in last year’s PGA Championship, Rahm enters the tournament as one of the early favorites based on his recent performances. Playing the best golf of his career, Rahm is in an excellent position to win his first career major.

Tiger Woods brought himself back into the mix with his win in the 2019 Masters. Now up to #9 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Woods already has one victory this season at the Zozo Championship. He has two top 10 finishes in his three events this year. Although he doesn’t possess the same power he did earlier in his career (165th in driving distance) Woods will still be a factor when this even begins. Riding the crowd, if Woods gets out to a hot start, he may be tough to catch.

Brooks Koepka owns the PGA Championship, having won each of the last two years. Koepka is currently #2 in the Official World Golf Rankings but hasn’t had the best start to 2020. In his three events this season, Koepka has zero top 25 finishes and has missed the cut in one. Still, Koepka is still one of the players with the best chance to capture the 2020 PGA Championship title. The big drive game of Koepka will keep him in contention most of the weekend as he looks to win his third-straight title.

Value Picks

Dustin Johnson is hoping his 2020 season turns out better than his 2019 season. While he finished second to Tiger Woods in the 2019 Masters, Johnson didn’t play in any other majors last year. Now ranked #5 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Johnson has two top 10 finishes this season in three events. Is Johnson can get back to his vintage form he is certainly capable of putting up a lot of birdies on this course.

Jason Day is the type of player that seems to put himself in contention in almost every major tournament. He has 15 career top 10 finishes in major events. Although he hasn’t had much success lately, Day is still a player to keep an eye on in this tournament. Now down to #43 in the Official World Gold Rankings, Day has missed the cut in two of the six events he has played this season with just one top 10 finish. However, much like Dustin Johnson, betting on Day to regain his vintage form in May and capture another major title isn’t the worst bet in the world.

Longshots

Gary Woodland had his best major performance in the 2018 PGA Championship when he finished in sixth place. Woodland is a player with a big drive and is one of the best at getting on greens in regulation. In his six events this season, Woodland has three top 10 finishes including a third-place finish. Up to #19 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Woodland is a player who could be trending upwards entering the PGA Championship in May and his playstyle is another one that fits this course well.

Viktor Hovland turned pro in late 2019 after an impressive amateur career that saw him #1 in the amateur rankings. Hovland is a young and powerful player who is currently 22nd in driving distance this season. He became the first player on the PGA Tour (since 1983) to record a streak of at least 18 rounds in the 60s, eventually making it 19-straight rounds. Hovland will be one of golf’s biggest names before his career is over. He could make that happen sooner than later with a surprise win at the PGA Championship. He certainly possesses the skill to do so.
