2021 San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview: Odds, Lines, & Predictions

2021 San Francisco 49ers Betting Preview

After an injury-riddled season in 2020, the 49ers are back in the national spotlight as many see them as a potential playoff team. This is because most of their star players were injured and head coach Kyle Shanahan made them competitive with the limited pieces he was given to work with. Star TE George Kittle, QB Jimmy Garroppolo, RB Raheem Mostert, and DE Nick Bosa are returning from injury and that’s important because these players were the keys to the 49ers’ success when they went to the Super Bowl just two seasons ago. Speaking of Jimmy G, he might lose his job this season as the 49ers traded their future away to get the third pick in the 2021 draft to select QB Trey Lance. Those two will be battling it out all training camp and Shanahan will not be afraid to throw the rookie into the fire if he feels like it will give him the best chance of winning. Whoever becomes the starting quarterback has a ton of pressure on their shoulders as the 49ers have one of the best rosters tops to bottom and they need to win now or they will blow the team up.

Key Offseason Transactions

Not many key free agents went to San Francisco this offseason. CB Richard Sherman and  RB Jerik McKinnon left this offseason, but the 49ers did sign RB Wayne Gallman and T Trent Williams to the biggest contract for a tackle in NFL history to make up for those losses. The big story with the 49ers was in the draft as they traded a king’s ransom to get the right to select QB Trey Lance with their third overall pick. Lance could be everything the 49ers need to get over the hump and win the Super Bowl if he is coached right. Lance only played one full season as a starting quarterback, which is worrisome, but what is not worrisome is his ability to throw the ball down the field with velocity and make plays out of the pocket if he is in trouble. Lance lacks experience, but he does have the physical and mental skills necessary to succeed in the NFL and it will be interesting to see who the 49ers crown as the starting quarterback for the 2021 season.

2021 San Francisco 49ers Betting Outlook

The San Francisco 49ers are a hard team to gauge this year betting-wise. We could see the team that crushed other teams with their potent rushing attack on their way to the Super Bowl, or we can see the team that limply went into the offseason due to their multitude of injuries. I am going to bank on the fact that the 49ers are going to be good again and that is good for all 49ers backers. The weird thing about the 49ers is that they are a team that runs the ball a lot yet gets the over most of the time. Usually, those two things are separate, but the 49ers find a way to make it work. The 49ers can throw the ball if they need to, but their main bread and butter is their rushing attack which is one of the best in the league. Their defense is also able to suffocate the opposition when they are healthy and you should expect a return to glory if you are a 49ers’ fan.

San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl Odds

Vegas expects big things for San Francisco this season as they have +1400 odds to win the Super Bowl. These are tied for the fifth-highest odds in the league behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Cheifs, Buffalo Bills, and division rival Los Angeles Rams. I think that Vegas is banking on the idea that San Francisco has a team that is similar to their Super Bowl appearing team two seasons ago, which would be one of the best teams in the NFL this season. That team had a ferocious defense and a powerful smash-mouth running style with just good enough quarterback play to dominate teams. And if Trey Lance is the quarterback prospect the 49ers think he is, then the 49ers are going to win the Super Bowl as long as they stay healthy.

San Francisco 49ers Playoff Odds

Even though the 49ers play in the ludicrously hard NFC West, VEgas still expects them to be in the playoffs. Currently, the 49ers have -169 odds of making the playoffs and +145 odds that they don’t. The real issue with the 49ers is their division, which is the best in the NFL. All of the teams in the NFC West can be playoff-bound if the ball bounces the right way for them and the 49ers are no exception. The Rams are the favorite for that division, since they have a complete team and upgraded at quarterback with Matthew Stafford instead of Jared Goff, and the Cardinals and Seahawks both have MVP candidates at quarterback in Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson. If the 49ers can manage to be the second-best team in that division come playoff time, then they should be in the playoffs as not many other teams around the NFL are as good as they are.

San Francisco 49ers Win Total Odds

The high expectations of the San Francisco 49ers can be seen in their wins total odds which sits at a baseline of 10.5 wins. The over odds for 10.5 wins is +107 while the under is -130. If I were to bet, I would take the under solely because of their division. The 49ers will not win or lose all 6 games against their divisional rivals, but they could easily lose at most 4 of those games. Then we also can take a look at their schedule where they have to play the Lions, Eagles, Packers, Colts, Bears, Jaguars, Vikings, Bengals, Titans, Falcons, and Texans. Only about 5 of those games are close to guaranteed wins which mean the range of 49ers wins could be as low as 8 or as high as 12 wins. That’s too much variability for me so I would take the under knowing there’s a chance that the over has a good chance of hitting.

San Francisco 49ers Player Futures Odds

The 49ers have two players that can win the DPOY and 1 player that can bring home to ROY. EDGE player Nick Bosa and LB Fred Warner are the players to watch on defense for the 49ers. Bosa has way better odds of winning the DPOY award at +1100 while Warner’s odds are at a lower +6600. This is because EDGE players get more recognition because of their high sack totals, but both players are great and fly around the field with aggression. On the offensive side of the ball, QB Trey Lance has +1000 odds of winning the ROY, which is tied for worst among the five first-round quarterbacks. He is tied with Jets QB Zach Wilson and this is not because Lance is a bad player, but more because we don’t know when he will play due to Jimmy Garappolo likely being the starting quarterback come Week 1.
