2022 Sentry Tournament Of Champions: Odds, Predictions, Picks
Contents
The 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions kicks off the 2022 PGA Tour with a loaded field, as Jon Rahm headlines the betting odds for this event. This is a unique event where there is no cut-line and it is a 39-man field. The Sentry Tournament of Champions tends to be a very low-scoring event, where four of the past five winners have posted -20 or lower. As you’d expect, the weather is clear and the winds will be around 7-12 mph. The field should have solid conditions to get the year started off on the right foot.

Plantation Course At Kapalua
Given it is the first week of January, I can’t think of a better place I’d want to be than Maui, Hawaii. While we can look at this as an extended vacation for these golfers, this is where these players start to warm up and possibly get a win under their belt early in the year.
Low scoring continues to be the trend here despite the course being long (7,596 Yards). There are three, more challenging, Par 3’s, 11 Par 4’s, and four Par 5’s. While this is a long course, elevation changes make this course relatively easy. With very little hazards in play, accuracy off the tee isn’t quite as important. Par 5 scoring, Strokes Gained: Approach, Driving Distance, Strokes Gained: Putting, and Birdies or Better Gained will be the key stats to look at.

Sentry Tournament of Champions Course History Notables
With or without the course history, it is no surprise to see Jon Rahm atop of the odds list for the Sentry Tournament of Champions. He has a 2nd place finish back in 2018, followed by three more top tens. Justin Thomas has won twice here, back in 2017 and 2019. He also has two third-place finishes and a T22 in 2018.
Bryson DeChambeau is getting some buzz and has finished twice in his last two trips to Maui. Xander Schauffele has already won this event (2019) but did follow it up with two top-5 finishes in 2021 and 2020.
2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions Picks & Predictions
Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas are the two heavy favorites for this event and that should be to nobody’s surprise. However, this is a deep field and there are some great values out there for those looking to fade the chalky favorites.
Sam Burns (+1800) – A name to watch out for this week and really for this upcoming season, is Sam Burns. He closed out the 2021 season with back-to-back top 10’s. His 2021 was a big success with two wins at Valspar and Sanderson Farms but also had six top 5 finishes overall. While Burns doesn’t have any course history here, he checks all the boxes for someone who can thrive at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. He averaged 0.7 strokes gained on Bermuda greens last season and got better as the year went on. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks 4th among the field in BoB Gained, 4th in Par 5 scoring, and 9th in Strokes Gained: Approach.
Hideki Matsuyama (+2200) – One of the first names I look at when it comes to odds for any tournament is Hideki Matsuyama. Putting isn’t a strong suit of Matsuyama’s game, so you are hoping he has it figured out for this week. His 2021 showing here was his worst putting display, but otherwise, he has been around even when it comes to Strokes Gained: Putting, where he pulled out a couple of top 5’s. Over the past 36 rounds, Matsuyama hovers around 8-12 among the field in Strokes Gained categories. As always, if Matsuyama can find the putter, he will be in contention for a win.
2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions To Make Top 10 Picks
Sungjae Im (+130) – I like even the +330 odds for a Top 5 finish with Sungjae Im. He has been great off the tee of late, and over the last 36 rounds ranks 4th in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green, 7th Off The Tee, and 12th in Approach. He also ranks 8th in the field in BoB Gained and 11th in Par 5 scoring. He also has had a ton of success on Bermuda greens and ended 2021 on a real tear. He had a first-place finish in October, following it up with a top 10 and top 20.
Talor Gooch (+200) – Talor Gooch is a name to keep an eye on for this event as he ranks 10th in the field in Strokes Gained: Par 5 and 3rd in Strokes Gained: Approach. We are continuing to look at players who can rack up birdies and Gooch ranks 7th in BoB Gained over the last 24 rounds. If Gooch can find some success on the greens, where he generally has been pretty good, he will have a lot of success this week.
