April Showers Continue In Sports Betting As Indiana Sees Drop

There are a few months within the calendar year that generally see a drop-off when revenue and handle numbers come out. April is one of them. With the end of March Madness and NBA/NHL not quite hitting the playoffs yet, April just naturally sees a drop-off. Mobile betting continues to be the big trend, bringing in over 90% of the handle. Indiana also saw two more sportsbooks go live with WynnBET and TwinSpires. The summer might be a little limited but the NBA playoffs should give the next few months a bump.

Indiana flagApril Numbers

Coming off of a strong March, Indiana saw its numbers drop more than 25% in April. Now, this was to be expected, and coming off a year on the pandemic, they had a better April than last. Overall, Indiana had a handle of $214M. The revenue saw a 24% drop and was down to $20M. DraftKings saw the most wagers, as they had a handle of $79M. FanDuel was second, at $67M.

Indiana added WynnBET and TwinSpires this past month. Barstool Sportsbook is also ready to launch. The market is very crowded right now and new sportsbooks also mean new user promos.

Basketball The Key Sport

After March Madness ended, a lot of states in the midwest saw a bigger drop-off because of how big basketball is in the area. Indiana is not any different. Basketball brought in $76%M in handle, where baseball was second with $44.5M. Baseball won’t be enough to mask not having college football and NFL. However, the NBA playoffs will be starting in May and going on over June. There should be a slight increase in handle for basketball over the next two months before another drop occurs. The NHL playoffs should also see a slight bump. June could be the best month out of the next three, given the U.S. Open is a major event.
