Arizona Sports Betting Ranks In the Top Six After First Full Year
Contents
We’ve only just recently passed the one-year anniversary of Arizona sports betting! And, as long as we’re celebrating its birthday, it’s a good time to look at just how successful the rollout of legal online betting has been in the Grand Canyon State.
Arizona residents have been very active with sports betting platforms since the official rollout, resulting in the state ranking as the sixth-best in the U.S. for sports wagering. Let’s take a deeper look at the major growth of betting in the desert.
Arizona Sports Betting Ranks Sixth After A Year
The Arizona sports betting market opened up on September 9th, 2021, perfectly coinciding with the official pro football kickoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a full year of legal betting in Arizona, the numbers are massive, with over $5 billion in total handle over its first twelve months of operation.
Interestingly, the state ranks right behind Nevada, an area with an obviously major reputation amongst bettors. All of this wagering has led to approximately $18 million in tax revenue for the state of Arizona, according to the local NBC news affiliate.
Since the full release of mobile sports betting apps in the state of Arizona, a number of other states have also seen full legal launches. Since the Arizona betting market opened, New York, Louisiana, and recently Kansas have all welcomed some of the top sports betting operators into their states.
Plus, Canada saw the province of Ontario fully launch legal sports betting in April. While it will be a while before we get year-long data from each of those states, it will certainly be interesting to compare Arizona’s betting numbers to the rest.
Tomorrow is the 1-year anniversary of Arizona launching sports betting.

What Was The Biggest Month For Arizona Sports Betting?
Considering that Arizona launched its legal sports betting market on the day that the NFL season kicked off, one would think that the early months would be the most popular amongst bettors.
Additionally, the Arizona Cardinals had an exciting start to the 2021 season, as fans in the area could place bets on the team as they started 7-0 with QB Kyler Murray putting together what looked to be an MVP season.
However, it may come as a surprise that March was the top month for Arizona sports betting, with over $700 million in sports betting handle. To be fair, March Madness was going on at the time, and the Arizona Wildcats were a top seed heading into the tournament. Plus, at the time, the Phoenix Suns were a top team in the Western Conference with NBA Finals aspirations.
