Los Angeles Rams vs San Francisco 49ers
The Los Angeles Rams enter this divisional rival matchup with a record of 4-1. They are coming off of a 30-10 win over the Washington Football Team last week. The San Francisco 49ers have struggled of late. After opening their season 2-1, they have lost their last two to drop to 2-3. The 49ers lost in blowout fashion last week to the Miami Dolphins 43-17.
This is a big game not only for the NFC West but for the entire NFC Playoff picture as a whole. The 49ers can’t afford to drop to 2-4 in arguably the toughest division in the NFL from top to bottom. For the Rams, a win here is needed if they want to close to the undefeated Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers in a fight for the top seed in the NFC.
The Rams’ defense is off to an amazing start this season. Looking like the defense that helped them get to Super Bowl 53 a couple years ago, Aaron Donald and company are on pace for a historic year. Donald himself is on pace to break Michael Strahan’s single-season sack record. As for the entire defense, they rank fourth in total yards allowed, second in passing yards allowed, ninth in rushing yards allowed, and third in points allowed.
The 49ers looked terrible on both sides of the ball last week. Their offense struggled as Jimmy Garoppolo returned from injury and their defense couldn’t stop the Dolphins if their lives depended on it. For the offense, we can chalk Garoppolo’s performance up to him not being ready to return from injury just yet. For the defense, it appears all of those injuries are finally starting to catch up with them.
Despite the 49ers coming off of their worst performance in years and the Rams looking as good as they are, Los Angeles is only a three-point favorite. San Francisco will play host to their cross-state rivals in this one which could account for the closer than expected spread.
While the public will certainly be hammering the Rams in this one (66% of the money at the time of this article), this is the type of game where fading the public should pay off. The Rams are a good team and certainly playoff worthy. However, after an embarrassing loss to a subpar team, the 49ers will come out with a chip on their shoulder in this one. Also, they know this is almost a must-win game for them at this early point in the season. The 49ers are still a good team as well, despite the major injuries. In a classic fade the public scenario, this is a game to bet on the 49ers to get the win on Sunday Night Football.
