San Diego State Aztecs +7.5
It’s scary to step in front of the absolute wagon that this UConn team has become, but San Diego State is the team to bet ATS in this game for my money. The Aztecs are coming off an incredibly impressive come-from-behind win against FAU that ended in a buzzer-beating shot by Lamont Butler.
I left that game with a ton of respect for head coach Brian Dutcher. First, he made some impressive adjustments as the game went on that fueled a 14-point comeback win. He also chose not to foul late to extend the game and didn’t call a timeout before the game-winning shot, instead letting his guys play.
Dutcher is well respected as one of the best game planners in the country, and while his Aztecs team certainly has some disadvantages in this championship, he’ll have his team well prepared. Dan Hurley is a solid coach in his own right, but I give the coaching edge to Dutcher.
If the Aztecs are going to keep this game close, they have to shoot better from the free-throw line. They made just 59.1% of their freebies against FAU, but that was uncharacteristic for a team that shot 72.4% from the line this season. UConn is outside the top 300 in defensive free throw rate, and the Aztecs have to take advantage.
UConn is a team that ranks 66th in point distribution to three-pointers. That makes for a fascinating matchup against SDSU who ranks third in defensive three-point rate allowed. There’s some room for regression based on their tournament numbers and FAU shot 40.9% from deep against them, but the Aztecs rank eighth in open 3 rate allowed per ShotQuality.
Look out for SDSU’s guards Butler, Matt Bradley, and Darrion Trammell to go to work in the mid range, as well. The Aztecs rank ninth in mid range frequency and the Huskies are 304th in efficiency allowed in the mid range per ShotQuality. If those shots are falling, the Aztecs will be in this game all night.
Ultimately, I believe we’ve reached the top of the market for this undoubtedly impressive UConn team. San Diego State has an elite defense and the experienced guard play to keep this game close, not to mention one of the best coaches in the country in Dutcher. I like them to cover the spread in the championship.
