After Virginia sports betting officially launched with FanDuel Sportsbook on Friday, the Commonwealth is getting BetMGM on Wednesday. The sports betting operator got the ok to launch on Sunday from the Virginia Lottery and is now live in the state.
The move comes shortly after BetMGM partnered with the Washington National, which will have mobile betting at the team’s ballpark and have a retail sportsbook in center field. It will be the first stadium BetMGM has in-person betting at.
BetMGM is now the fourth online betting operator in Virginia after FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers all went live in the last five days. With four of the 12 sports betting licenses now gone in Virginia, the opportunities to secure one of the remaining eight are narrowed. The Commonwealth planned only having 12 betting operators in the state but is now looking at creating an amendment to expand sports betting the number of operators.
The Virginia Lottery received 25 applications to go live in the state, and the Commonwealth should consider the number of operators allowed in the state with the demand it is seeing.
What to Expect From BetMGM
BetMGM is one of the market leaders in online sports betting. The sportsbook has a mobile app available for IOS and Android users and is also easy to use to create pre-game or in-game bets. Virginia becomes the 10th state BetMGM has entered, putting them one state behind market leader DraftKings.
“We’re ecstatic that BetMGM is one of the first mobile sports betting platforms to launch in Virginia,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt said in a press release. Greenblatt explained that BetMGM has big plans with Virginia sports bettors, thanks to the reach the mobile betting operator has with MGM National Harbor in Maryland and the Washington Nationals.

Who Else is In Virginia?
FanDuel kicked off the first wave of sportsbooks to enter the Commonwealth. Thanks to a legal loophole with the Washington Football Team having its headquarters in Virginia, FanDuel was the first sportsbook to launch. FanDuel beat rival DraftKings by two days who went live in Virginia on Sunday.
BetRivers also went live on Wednesday with BetMGM. This rounds out the first four sportsbooks live in the Commonwealth. BetRivers was able to enter the market thanks to its partnership with Rush Street Interactive. The Chicago-based gaming operator will be building a casino in the state, giving BetRivers the boost into Virginia.
DraftKings and BetMGM are currently the two sports betting operators that do not have a tethered partnership with a Virginia gaming entity. Both will be going live with online-only platforms and will not have a partnership with a sports team, casino, or racetrack.
