Tennessee Sports Betting
On April 30, 2019, sports betting was first legalized in Tennessee with a bill passed by the state’s legislature. States typically require their governor to sign to approve the sports betting bill, but in Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee allowed the sports betting bill to pass without his signature. Tennessee’s legal sports betting market launched on November 1, 2020, and it’s one of the only states to only allow sports betting online – there are no physical, in-person sportsbooks. William Hill Sportsbook launched in Tennessee on March 11, 2021, and was acquired by Caesars on April 22, 2021. After William Hill rebranding as Caesars Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook is now up-and-running in Tennessee.
Caesars is one of the top gaming companies in the United States and has put in hard work to bring their sports betting offerings up to their high standard. Caesars opened its online casino in 2013 and opened its online sportsbook soon after sports betting was legalized on a federal level by the Supreme Court. The acquisition of William Hill will allow Caesars to provide some of the country’s most competitive sports betting offerings, and we expect it to be one of the most-used sportsbooks in Tennessee.

Competition in the Tennessee Market
With only online sports betting platforms and no in-person bets, Tennessee is a unique market. In addition, there are several rules which do not exist in other states, such as a 10% hold. While this makes for a cautious approach to the Tennessee market from competing sportsbooks, there are many competitors to Caesars in the market.
DraftKings Sportsbook
DraftKings is one of the most successful Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) and sports betting platforms in the United States. It was able to launch its Tennessee sports betting operations on November 1, 2020. DraftKings provides its users with a simple yet efficient design, a clear presentation of information, and an overall great user experience.
FanDuel Sportsbook
FanDuel Sportsbook launched its Tennessee sports betting platform on November 1, 2020, as it accomplished its goal of being one of the first platforms in the Tennessee market. FanDuel has a sleek and modern design for its website and app, and while it offers a bit less variety in the way of bets, it has an excellent selection of promotions.
BetMGM Sportsbook
The third and final sportsbook to get in on the Tennessee market on November 1, 2020, was BetMGM Sportsbook. BetMGM is a massive hotel and casino chain that has built up an awesome sports betting platform. The Tennessee Titans have a sponsorship agreement with BetMGM. With a solid design and a ton of promotions, BetMGM is a great choice as well.
Tennessee Teams to Bet On
Tennessee is home to several professional and college sports teams, which will garner a ton of sports betting interest. The Memphis Grizzlies are the hometown NBA team, and Caesars allows you to bet on Grizzlies’ points spreads, Moneylines, or over/unders as well as futures such as playoff odds or win totals. Memphis is coming off an impressive season led by Ja Morant.
The Tennessee Titans are the local NFL team and likely the biggest sports team in Tennessee. Originally the Houston Oilers, the Titans are a proud franchise with tons of awesome offensive talent on the roster, such as Derrick Henry, A.J. Brown, and Julio Jones. Caesars offers bets on every Titans game, team futures, and more.
Finally, Tennessee is home to the Nashville Predators, an NHL expansion team added in 1998. The team is improving in its play as of late and will provide another intriguing betting option. Of course, the University of Tennessee Volunteers have widely-recognized SEC football and basketball teams that will make for interesting betting opportunities.
Tennessee Legal Sports Betting History
Sports betting was legalized on April 30, 2019, in Tennessee following Governor Bill Lee allowing the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act presented in the legislature to pass without his signature. Tennessee is one of the only states in America to allow sports betting only on online platforms with no physical sportsbooks. Online sportsbooks launched on November 1, 2020, with DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM entering the market. On March 11, 2021, William Hill launched in Tennessee and rebranded as Caesars Sportsbook following their lucrative acquisition.
Tennessee Sports Betting Rules
There are no brick-and-mortar sports betting locations in the state of Tennessee with only mobile and online betting, but that’s far from the unique rule presented by the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act. There is no restriction on who can apply for a license in the state, but a $75,000 licensing fee is one of the highest in the country and an obvious deterrent for some sportsbooks. Tennessee currently has a hold of 10% on sports bets, which is about two times the industry standard. Additionally, a proposed rule requires sportsbooks to cap payouts at 85% and hold 15% of the bet – that’s three times the industry standard. In other words, if you had a $100 payout from a bet, you would only be able to cash in on $85 of those winnings.
Tennessee also requires sports betting operators to purchase official league data from professional leagues to provide live or in-play betting. As of now, in-play betting on college sports is not allowed. There is also a 20% sports betting tax for operators in Tennessee, which is one of the highest in the United States. With all of these unique rules and barriers to entry, it’s not surprising that there are currently only four licensed sportsbooks in Tennessee despite it being an open market.
Caesars Tennessee Future Bet
Tennessee Titans to win the AFC South: +110
There are several futures markets for the Titans available on Caesars in advance of the NFL season, but my favorite is the Titans to win the AFC South at +110. With the Texans fielding arguably the worst roster in football and the Jaguars integrating a first-time NFL head coach and a rookie quarterback, it appears to be a two-horse race between the Colts and Titans AFC South. Well, one horse and “one that is gigantic in size or power” per Merriam Webster, but you catch my drift.
The Titans had the fourth-best scoring offense in the NFL last year, and it will arguably be improved as future Hall of Famer Julio Jones replaces Corey Davis. Jones joins Derrick Henry and A.J. Brown in one of the most talented offensive nuclei in the league. The Titans should also be expecting defensive improvements following the additions of pass-rusher Bud Dupree and cornerbacks Janoris Jenkins and rookie Caleb Farley.
The Colts are integrating Carson Wentz as their new starting quarterback, presenting them with a wide range of outcomes, while Ryan Tannehill will be leading the Titans with one of the best offenses in the NFL. I’ll take Tennessee at a great value to win this division.

Many states have significant restrictions on college sports betting, but college sports fans can place bets rather easily in Tennessee. The only notable restriction on college sports betting is the prohibition of in-play or live bets on college sports games. The University of Tennessee’s many sports programs will therefore be eligible for betting.
What is the legal age for sports betting in Tennessee?
As with most of the United States, you must be at least 21 years old to bet on sports in Tennessee with one of the online sportsbooks. You can, however, bet in casinos and participate in state-regulated lottery games at the age of 18.
Can you bet on live games on Caesars Sportsbook?
Yes, Caesars does have excellent functionality for live betting on all professional sports, so long as they purchase official league data as per Tennessee regulations. At this time, Tennessee does prohibit betting on college sports, however. Live betting is an awesome way to engage with sports games you are watching and add additional excitement.
Does Caesars Sportsbook have a mobile application?
The Caesars Sportsbook mobile application is available on both iOS and Android devices. For iOS devices, it is easy to download the Caesars Sportsbook app on the App Store. For Android devices, the Google Play store currently does not allow for real money gaming apps, but you can download the Caesars application from their official website.
Why does Caesars Sportsbook need my Geolocation?
You must be within the borders of a state that has launched its mobile sports betting to bet on sports with Caesars Sportsbook. To verify your location, all licensed and regulated sportsbooks in the United States will require you to share your location. You can easily toggle this feature in the settings of your mobile device or computer.
What banking methods does Caesars Sportsbook offer online in Tennessee?
Each state has its own banking options, but we expect Caesars Sportsbook to have its full offering in Tennessee of ACH, Mastercard, Visa, American Express, PayPal, bank transfers, PayNearMe, Cash at Cage, and many more. There is no fee for deposits and withdrawals with Caesars.
What kind of customer support does Caesars Sportsbook provide?
Caesars has some of the best customer support in the online sports betting industry with many options that should fulfill all of your needs. There is an extensive online FAQ page, a live chat support option on the website, and an email address and phone number for additional communication if necessary.
What is the hold rate for sportsbooks in Tennessee?
Per the Tennessee Sports Gaming Act, there is a 10% hold rate for sports betting operators. This means that in Tennessee, the “vig” or charge on odds from sportsbooks will be higher than in other states. It’s unclear how this will affect the Tennessee sports betting market at this point, but it’s worth monitoring moving forward.
