Chris Jones Super Bowl 57 MVP Odds: Latest Super Bowl 2023 MVP Odds

Chris Jones’ current Super Bowl MVP odds are . When the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, we will crown the well-deserved champion after a season-long effort. Not only will we have a new Super Bowl champion, but we will have a Super Bowl MVP as well. It’s one of the most prestigious honors a player can achieve as it signifies who stepped up in the biggest game of the year. In what is a typical quarterback driven award, can a defenseman take home the hardware?

Chris Jones Super Bowl MVP Odds

While the Chiefs defense has continued their trend of playing around average in the nation, Chris Jones has stepped up as one of the unit’s lone bright spots as he has wreaked havoc all season long. He has been an opposing quarterback’s worst nightmare by ending the season with 15.5 sacks.

Sacks are to defensemen as touchdowns are to skill players when it comes to winning the Super Bowl MVP and that is exactly what Chris Jones has been doing throughout the course of the year. It was no different in their last playoff game as he took advantage of a weak Bengals offensive line and finished the game with two sacks on Joe Burrow.

While the Chiefs are mainly known for their offense, any elite defensive play would surely be noticed as that would be an oddity in comparison to their season metrics. The Chiefs finished 17th Overall in Def DVOA.

How Chris Jones can win the award

As previously mentioned, the best possible chance Chris Jones has of making a claim for the Super Bowl MVP is to be a menace in the backfield. Racking up sacks is the golden ticket to hoisting up the MVP trophy as we have seen in previous Super Bowl defenseman MVP performances.

Any sack he acquires in this matchup would be especially impressive as Jalen Hurts is one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the league. His scrambling ability makes it difficult for lineman to bring him down as Hurts can make a cut on a dime.

The Chiefs lack a respectable defense which means a victory off the backs of this unit would shift the narrative heavily in their favor. Should Jones be able to negate Hurts running ability with a few sacks of his own, let alone a forced fumble or two, then he can expect to have his name high up on the list for the award.

How Chris Jones cannot win the award

Sadly, history is not on his side as the last defensive lineman to win the award was in Super Bowl XX. Defensive end Richard Dent hoisted the trophy after finishing the game with two sacks and two forced fumbles as the Bears beat the Patriots 46-10.

There is an added importance on acquiring sacks in order for Chris Jones to win the award and that will not come by so easily. The Eagles offensive line is the best in the nation in pass protection, limiting back field pressure.

Not only are they great at pass protection, but Jalen Hurt’s dual threat ability makes it especially difficult in bringing him down. He has gotten especially better at breaking free and throwing the ball away to avoid danger. That was made apparent against the 49ers pressure as Hurts routinely scrambled to safety.

Verdict

With history not in his favor, as well as getting a tough assignment against the Eagles offensive line, I will not be adding Chris Jones to my MVP portfolio. Bringing down Hurts for multiple sacks is too tough a feat for me to comfortably lay a wager on his MVP chances.
