On Thursday morning, the second round of Wimbledon continues with a plethora of pleasing matches at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. With a great day of tennis ahead, one match in particular caught my eye. Elisabetta Cocciaretto, a talented Italian, is coming off the biggest victory of her career. Fade Cocciaretto After Momentous Win?
Women’s WTA rankings always create an interesting dynamic. A player’s ranking determines their position in tournament draws and could even earn them a bye in smaller events. Every competitor knows where they stand and is constantly looking to defeat the players above them.
As expected, the best way for lower-ranked players to climb the rankings is to beat someone ranked ahead of them. Like a lower seed upsetting an upper-echelon opponent in March Madness, these upsets are huge moments for up-and-comers.
With that in mind, Cocciaretto is coming off the most notable win during her five-year run. Despite her world No. 116 ranking, she defeated No. 3 Jessica Pegula as a +700 underdog.
Cocciaretto tallied her first win against a top-10 player and second against a top-5 commodity. An important milestone in her career should be celebrated, but what does this mean for her stock moving forward?
Will it be a launching pad for Cocciaretto to make a deep run in this tournament? Conversely, there’s the possibility that this match is a letdown spot. After putting all that effort and energy into her epic win, Cocciaretto may struggle to rev up again, facing the 98th-ranked Volynets.
This match also creates the opportunity to find some value across the betting markets. Not only do sportsbooks stand pat for this potential letdown spot, but they actually price players in Cocciaretto’s situation even more strongly. I understand power rating Cocciaretto higher after her upset victory. That improvement will show over the long term.
Nevertheless, in the short term, bettors have a chance to attack this hasty market refinement.
Volynets vs. Cocciaretto Odds: Best Bet(s)
Handicapping grass tennis can be tough. Their match is just one month’s worth of events for players to hone their skills on a surface that is much different than hard or clay courts. We are forced to look at a small sample and work with limited data. For one, Volynets has only played 29 matches on grass over five seasons, but she’s excelled at times during this stretch.
On Tuesday, she battled Tatjana Maria, one of the smarter grass players on tour. Based on Volynets’ past success and first-round win, I believe she’s underrated.
On this surface, the Italian has more success than the American. However, it doesn’t justify pricing Cocciaretto as such a hefty favorite. Hence, I’m looking to back Volynets in a pair of markets.
Let’s start on the moneyline, which I bet at +185 at DraftKings. By converting the odds to implied probability, Volynets has a 35.1% chance to win, which is too low for my money.
Elsewhere, I like Volynets +3.5 (+105) on the game spread. Grass courts tend to lead to more tiebreakers, making the 3.5 games even more attractive than they would be on other surfaces.
