Betting Options in Colorado

Almost every kind of sports bet is legal in Colorado and available through one of the many sportsbooks operating in the state.

draftkings betslipUnlike some states, Colorado bettors can place wagers on local college teams and other college sports taking place in the state. The one exception to this regulation is for individual proposition bets on college athletes.

Prop bets are legal and popular, but in Colorado, they are only legal on professional sports. Wagering on high school sports and esports is also not allowed.

The main types of wagers that Colorado sports bettors will encounter are as follows:

Point Spread: The most basic of team sports bets – either take the points or give them.

Moneyline: Your basic win/loss bet that uses odds to even out the betting field as opposed to a point spread.

Over/Under: Also known as a totals bet because you are betting on the total combined points scored in the game. Your bet is on whether the total will go over or under the posted line.

Parlays: Popular among players, these are small bets combined into one large bet, which, if it wins, pays off big. But just one loss and the entire bet is lost.

Proposition Bets: These are individual or team bets on a professional sporting event. Prop bets may include the first team to score, who hits the most home runs, or who makes the most three-pointers.

Futures Bets: These are bets on events that have yet to take place, like the winner of the Super Bowl or World Series.

Live Betting: These are bets placed on events and games already in progress. Also known as in-play betting, as the event progresses, the odds and point spread automatically change.

Colorado has teams in all five major professional team sports, and all of them are based in Denver about an hour north of Colorado Springs.

The Broncos play their home games at Empower Field at Mile High, which they famously sell out every year.

An expansion team with the ABA in 1967, the Nuggets became an NBA franchise in 1976. They have made it as far as the Western Conference Finals four different times, but lost all four of those series, including three losses to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Nuggets play home games at the Pepsi Center just a couple of blocks away from Empower Field.

Colorado Avalanche

Founded as the Quebec Nordiques in 1972, the NHL franchise moved to Denver in 1995 and became the Colorado Avalanche. They also won the franchise’s first Stanley Cup during that inaugural season in Colorado. The Avalanche added a second Stanley Cup victory in 2001.

The Avalanche also call the Pepsi Center home.

In 1993, Major League Baseball expanded by adding two teams to the National League – the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies. The Rockies played their initial season in Mile High Stadium, then the home of the Denver Broncos, and led the league in season attendance with 4,483,500.

The Rockies won a National League pennant in 2007 and have played their home games at Coors Field (in Lower Downtown Denver) since 1995.

Colorado Rapids

An original member of the MLS, the Rapids have been in the Denver area since the soccer league was created in 1996. They have twice competed for the MLS Cup, winning it in 2010 over FC Dallas.

The Rapids play their home games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the Denver suburb of Commerce City.

College Sports in Colorado

It is legal to bet on in-state college sports teams, and Colorado Springs residents have several great college sports teams to choose from.

colorado buffaloesUniversity of Colorado

Colorado has a football national championship from 1990, Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam (1994), and Heisman Trophy runner-up Byron Whizzer White (1937). He’s best known as former Associate of the United States Supreme Court.

Colorado has two main rivals in football – Utah, which it first played in 1903, and Colorado State, which it plays each year in the Rocky Mountain Showdown, a series that goes back to 1893.

The Buffaloes men’s basketball team hasn’t nearly had the same success as football. It was 1955 when CU last played in a Final Four.

The Buffaloes make their home in Boulder and play in the Pac-12 Conference.

Colorado State RamsColorado State University

Located in Ft. Collins, Colorado State currently plays in the Mountain West Conference and has won 15 conference titles, dating back to its first title in 1915 as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Rams have also appeared in 17 bowl games.

The Rams men’s basketball team has been to 10 NCAA Tournaments and once made it as far as the Elite Eight.

Located right in Colorado Springs, the Air Force football season is one of the highlights of the local sports calendar. Air Force and its famous triple-option offense has been to 27 bowl games and topped double-digit wins six times in its history.

Air Force also plays in the Mountain West, but even though Colorado State is an in-state conference rival, Air Force’s two biggest rivals by far are Army and Navy. The three teams compete annually for the Commander in Chief’s Trophy, which the Falcons have won more than anyone else.

Air Force basketball has been much more limited in success but did win the Mountain West Conference in 2003.

Northern Colorado, University of Denver

The other colleges in Colorado that play Division I sports are Northern Colorado in Greeley and the University of Denver.

Northern Colorado plays football in the Big Sky Conference of the FCS. Back when it was called Division II, the Bears won two national championships. Bears men’s basketball made the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

The University of Denver Pioneers haven’t played football since 1961, but their men’s basketball team has made it to three NITs. Men’s lacrosse won the 2015 national championship, and the Denver men’s hockey team has eight national championships – second-most all-time, trailing only Michigan.
